Annotation: STIMULATION EFFECTS OF THE CARD TEST IN POLYGRAPH EXAMINATIONS WERE STUDIED BY COMPARING THE FIRST TEST RECORD IN THE EXAMINATION SERIES WITH THE TEST RECORD OBTAINED AFTER THE CARD TEST.
Abstract: SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES WERE TO DETERMINE IF THE CARD TEST STIMULATED A SUBJECT ON THE SUBSEQUENT TEST TO RESPOND MORE SIGNIFICANTLY OR REASSURED A TRUTHFUL SUBJECT BY ACCENTUATING RESPONSES TO CONTROL QUESTIONS. INCREASED RESPONSES OF A LYING SUBJECT TO PERTINENT CRIME QUESTIONS WAS ALSO CHECKED. IT WAS HOPED THAT THE CARD TEST WOULD REDUCE THE NUMBER OF INCONCLUSIVE CASE REPORTS REDUCED THE POSSIBILITY OF ERROR. A FIVE-CHANNEL REID POLYGRAPH WAS USED TO CONDUCT THE POLYGRAPH EXAMINATIONS. POLYGRAPH RECORDS WERE OBTAINED FROM 30 INVESTIGATIONS INVOLVING RAPE, SEXUAL MOLESTATION, INDUSTRIAL SABOTAGE, DRUGS, AND THEFT. OF THESE CASES, 15 WERE VERIFIED TRUTHFUL AND 15 WERE VERIFIED UNTRUTHFUL. THE ACCURACY OF CORRECTLY DETECTING UNTRUTHFUL SUBJECTS AND IDENTIFYING TRUTHFUL SUBJECTS IN THE FIRST CHART WAS 55.7 PERCENT. ERRORS IN IDENTIFYING TRUTHFUL SUBJECTS AS LIARS OR LYING SUBJECTS AS TRUTHFUL WERE ALSO MINIMIZED. RESULTS CLEARLY SHOW THE CARD TEST IS A VALUABLE STIMULATION TECHNIQUE. SUPPORTING DATA ARE TABULATED. (DEP)
