Annotation: RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE GENERAL READING, REFERENCE, VOCATIONAL, AND LEGAL COMPONENTS OF A PRISON LIBRARY FOR THE MILAN, MICH., FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION ARE PUT FORTH.
Abstract: THE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE THE RESULT OF A STUDY BY LIBRARY SCIENCE STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN. THEY CALL FOR AN INMATE LIBRARY INCLUDING A REFERENCE COLLECTION TO SUPPLEMENT THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AND STIMULATE INTELLECTUAL INQUIRY, A VOCATIONAL INFORMATION CENTER TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON A WIDE RANGE OF OCCUPATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR WHICH THE EX-OFFENDER IS ELIGIBLE, AND A LAW LIBRARY AND GENERAL COLLECTION. AN INMATE LIBRARIAN WITH A SUPPORT STAFF IS SUGGESTED. TRAINING WOULD BE PROVIDED BY VISITING LIBRARY SCIENCE STUDENTS. THE PHYSICAL PLANT IS IMPORTANT AND SHOULD ALLOW THE COLLECTION TO BE CONTAINED IN ONE LOCATION. THE LIBRARY SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL INMATES AND BE ATTRACTIVE. (SPECIFIC PLANS FOR THE MILAN FACILITY ARE NOTED IN THIS AREA). A BOOK-SELECTION POLICY, LONG-RANGE GOALS, AND PROMOTION AND PUBLICITY POLICY SHOULD ALL BE ESTABLISHED. PROCEDURES FOR THESE AND FOR DEVELOPING AND FINANCING EACH COMPONENT OF THE LIBRARY ARE INDICATED. A LIST OF RECOMMENDED BOOKS IS PROVIDED FOR EACH LIBRARY COMPONENT. A QUESTIONNAIRE FOR USER EVALUATION OF THE LIBRARY IS INCLUDED. (RCB)
