Abstract: CASE STUDIES AND HISTORICAL ANALYSES AS WELL AS QUANTITATIVE INVESTIGATIONS ARE INCLUDED. ONE THEME EVIDENT IN SEVERAL PAPERS IS AN EMPHASIS ON CONTROL OF WHITE-COLLAR CRIME, INCORPORATING AN INTEREST IN THE LEGAL DEFINITIONS OF CRIME, AS WELL AS ISSUES OF DETERRENCE. THIS INTEREST IS ILLUSTRATED IN ESSAYS SHOWING HOW STATISTICS CAN BE BROUGHT INTO THE COURTROOM IN WHITE-COLLAR CRIME CASES AND HOW AUDITORS CAN DETECT FRAUD. IT IS ALSO SHOWN IN PAPERS CONCERNED WITH LEGALISTIC PRECISIONS AS A FACTOR LIMITING THE PROSECUTABILITY, OF WHITE-COLLAR CRIMINALS, AND IN ESSAYS DESCRIBING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCIES, THE DETERRENT EFFECT OF PROSECUTION ON PERSONS WHO PERPETRATE HOME REPAIR FRAUDS, AND METHODS FOR PREVENTING COMPUTER FRAUDS. ANOTHER THEME INCLUDES DEVELOPMENT, ENACTMENT, AND FUNCTIONING OF LAWS DENOTING WHITE-COLLAR OFFENSES. THIS ISSUE IS HANDLED HISTORICALLY IN REGARD TO ENGLISH FACTORY LAWS, CONTEMPORANEOUSLY IN REGARD TO STRIP MINING, AND CROSS-CULTURALLY WITH ATTENTION TO ANTITRUST LAW. THE ROLE OF LAWS AND REGULATIONS IN THE CONDUCT OF BUSINESS IS ALSO DISCUSSED. A THIRD THEME RELATES TO CORPORATE INVOLVEMENT IN WHITE-COLLAR CRIME, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE CORPORATION AS A FORCE ENGENDERING LAW VIOLATION. A FINAL THEME IS THE CONCERN WITH VICTIMS OF WHITE-COLLAR CRIME. PAPERS REPORT ON PUBLIC EVALUATIONS OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF WHITE-COLLAR CRIME AS THESE RELATE TO THE DEGREE OF THE PHYSICAL IMPACT AND HARM CAUSED BY THE PROSCRIBED ACTS, SURVEY VICTIMIZATION OF ELDERLY PERSONS, AND DEAL WITH THE QUESTION OF HOW CORPORATE PERSONNEL VIEW THEIR FIRM AS THE VICTIM OF THE GOVERNMENT. NOTES AND REFERENCES ACCOMPANY EACH CHAPTER. TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--AOP)
