Annotation: A TEXT INTERPRETATION PROGRAM FOR A MINICOMPUTER/DISPLAY PROCESSOR (SKETCH) THAT UTILIZES BOTH HUMAN DESCRIPTIVE POWERS AND COMPUTER CAPABILITIES FOR GENERATING FACIAL IMAGES OF SUSPECTS IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract: FACIAL IMAGES ARE GENERATED FROM COMPOSITE IDENTI-KIT AND PHOTO-FIT FEATURES, THE TWO MOST WIDESPREAD AIDS TO COMPOSITE IMAGE GENERATION. THE USE OF PHOTO-FIT TRANSPARENCIES, FOR INSTANCE, PERMITS THE FORMATION OF OVER 12,000 MILLION POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF FEATURES. THROUGH THE USE OF AN INTERACTIVE LANGUAGE THAT ALLOWS CONVERSATIONAL DIALOGUES BETWEEN THE USER AND IMAGE MODIFICATION ROUTINES, FACIAL IMAGES FROM COMPOSITE IDENTI-KIT AND PHOTO-FIT FEATURES ARE GENERATED ON A MINICOMPUTER/DISPLAY PROCESSOR. THE ACTUAL TEXT INTERPRETATION PROGRAM (SKETCH) THAT MAKES USER-MACHINE DIALOGUES POSSIBLE WAS BUILT AROUND A POLICE IDENTIFICATIONTECHNIQUE. PHOTOGRAPHS OF IMAGES GENERATED BY THE PROGRAM ARE PRESENTED TO ILLUSTRATE THE USE OF A FEW TYPICAL USER COMMANDS. OTHER FACETS OF THE INTERACTIVE LANGUAGE DESCRIBED INCLUDE WORD ORDER, THE USE OF PREDICATE MODIFIERS FOR VARIABLE ADJUSTMENT, AND PLACING ADDITIONAL FACIAL FEATURES IN THE FILE. THREE APPENDIXES PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: (1) THE SUPERVISION OF A SKETCH PROGRAM THROUGH DISTRIBUTION OF CONTROL OVER SEQUENCES OF ROUTINES, (2) ILLUSTRATION OF THE COMPRESSION OF IMAGE DATA FOR VECTOR DISPLAY PROCESSORS, AND (3) DEMONSTRATION OF SKETCH USER COMMANDS THROUGH THE DISPLAY OF A SEQUENCE OF PHOTOGRAPHS. REFERENCES, CHARTS, AND FIGURES ARE PROVIDED.
