Annotation: THIS 1965 REPORT REVEALS LITTLE CHANGE IN THE PATTERNS OF ILLICIT DRUG TRAFFIC AS COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS YEARS.
Abstract: ILLICIT TRAFFIC IS BEING CONDUCTED ON A LARGE SCALE, ESPECIALLY IN OPIATES. A TOTAL OF 45 COUNTRIES AND TERRITORIES SENT REPORTS ON SEIZURES TO THE GENERAL SECRETARIAT OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE ORGANIZATION (INTERPOL). REPORTS FROM AFRICA SUGGEST THAT TRAFFIC IN CANNABIS ALTERED LITTLE SINCE 1964. IN NORTH AMERICA, THE TRAFFIC IS MAINLY IN DIACETYMORPHINE, AS WELL AS COCAINE AND CANNABIS. INFORMATION FROM SOUTH AMERICA SUGGESTS THAT COCAINE TRAFFIC IS HEAVY IN THAT AREA, WITH THE DRUG ORIGINATING IN PERU AND BOLIVIA. IN EUROPE, TRAFFIC IN NARCOTIC DRUGS HAS NOT DECREASED. FRANCE REMAINS THE CENTER FOR TRANS-SHIPMENT OF DRUGS COMING FROM THE NEAR EAST AND BEING SENT TO NORTH AMERICA. ALSO, CONVERSION OF MORPHINE BASE INTO HEROIN OCCURS IN FRANCE. THE TRAFFIC IN CANNABIS APPEARS TO HAVE REACHED SERIOUS PROPORTIONS IN EUROPE ALSO, WITH INDIVIDUALS TRAVELING TO NORTH AFRICA TO BRING THE DRUG BACK TO EUROPE. CANNABIS IS SMUGGLED INTO THE UNITED KINGDOM FROM NIGERIA, JAMAICA, CYPRUS, AND PAKISTAN IN REGULAR MAIL PARCELS. THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST REMAINS AN IMPORTANT CENTER OF OPIUM, MORPHINE, AND CANNABIS PRODUCTION, AS WELL AS BEING THE CENTER OF DRUG SHIPMENTS TO EUROPE. TABLES PRESENT DATA ON RAW OPIUM, PREPARED OPIUM, MORPHINE, DIACETYLMORPHINE, COCAINE, CANNABIS, AND SYNTHETIC NARCOTIC DRUGS. INTERNATIONAL POLICE COOPERATION DATA IS ALSO GIVEN. (PRG)
