Abstract: INTERNATIONAL PATTERNS AND TECHNIQUES OF COUNTERFEITING USED SINCE 1961 ARE IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED IN THIS REPORT FROM A CONFERENCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE ORGANIZATION. PAPER MONEY, CHECKS, TRAVELERS CHECKS, BANK ORDERS, TREASURY BONDS, BRITISH POSTAL ORDERS, FISCAL STAMPS, STOCKS AND SHARES, BONDS, BILLS OF EXCHANGE, AND METAL CURRENCY ARE AMONG THE COUNTERFEITING TYPES ADDRESSED. MODERN TECHNICAL METHODS FOR DOCUMENTS REPRODUCTION AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON CURRENCY COUNTERFEITING ARE ALSO CONSIDERED. A DISCUSSION OF TECHNICAL METHODS FOR PREVENTING COUNTERFEITING OF PAPER CURRENCY COVERS PAPER USED, SECURITY FEATURES, FORMAT, AND PRINTING; OF METAL CURRENCY DEALS WITH ENGRAVING, PARTICULARLY THE COIN RIM. ARTICLES FROM THE 1929 GENEVA CONVENTION, WITH 26 COUNTRIES REPRESENTED, CONCERNING THE LEGAL ASPECTS OF COUNTERFEITING ARE PRESENTED, AND COUNTERFEIT LEGISLATION IN PARTICULAR COUNTRIES IS BRIEFLY REVIEWED. THE TREATMENT OF POLICE ACTION AGAINST COUNTERFEITERS DEALS WITH INVESTIGATION METHODS, SCIENTIFIC EXAMINATION OF COUNTERFEITS, AND SPECIALIZATION AND COORDINATION AT THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVELS. A SECTION IS ALSO DEVOTED TO CAMPAIGNS TO INFORM THE PUBLIC AND GENERAL COUNTERFEITING PREVENTION. TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED REGARDING COUNTERFEITING IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES. (RCB)
