Annotation: AN ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION RECEIVED BY THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE ORGANIZATION (INTERPOL) CONCERNING INTERNATIONAL CURRENCY COUNTERFEITING DURING 1968 IS PRESENTED.
Abstract: THE REPORT NOTES THAT THE AMERICAN DOLLAR IS COUNTERFEITED MORE OFTEN THAN ANY OTHER CURRENCY, WITH COUNTERFEIT U.S. BANKNOTES FOUND IN 42 COUNTRIES IN 1968. A TOTAL OF 26 COUNTRIES HAD THEIR CURRENCY COUNTERFEITED, WITH BRITISH, CANADIAN, ITALIAN, AND YUGOSLAV NOTES SEIZED IN WESTERN EUROPE, COUNTERFEIT BRAZILIAN NOTES SEIZED IN ARGENTINA, COUNTERFEIT SPANISH NOTES SEIZED IN GERMANY AND FRANCE, AND COUNTERFEIT INDIAN NOTES SEIZED IN NEPAL. A TOTAL OF 189 NEW TYPES OF COUNTERFEIT U.S. NOTES WERE IDENTIFIED IN 1968 COMPARED TO 246 TYPES IN 1967. ALSO, 30 NEW TYPES OF COUNTERFEIT NON-AMERICAN CURRENCIES WERE IDENTIFIED IN 1968. COUNTERFEIT NOTES, IN BOTH AMERICAN AND NON-AMERICAN CURRENCIES, CIRCULATED WIDELY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE REPORT PROVIDES CASE HISTORIES OF COUNTERFEITING OPERATIONS IN WEST GERMANY, ARGENTINA, AUSTRALIA, AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, SPAIN, FRANCE, ITALY, THE UNITED KINGDOM, TURKEY, AND YUGOSLAVIA, AS WELL AS DETAILED TABULAR DATA ON NUMEROUS COUNTRIES.
