Annotation: IMPLEMENTATION OF A PAROLE EDUCATION PROGRAM IN PENNSYLVANIA CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IS PROPOSED, AND A COURSE OUTLINE FOR THE PROGRAM IS PRESENTED.
Abstract: THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM WOULD BE TO TEACH OFFENDERS ABOUT THE PAROLE PROCESS, THEREBY DISPELLING MYTHS AND RUMORS ABOUT PAROLE THAT ARISE WITHIN THE PRISON POPULATION. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THESE MISUNDERSTANDINGS DETRACT FROM THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PAROLE SUPERVISION, PARTICULARLY FOR YOUNG OFFENDERS. THE PROPOSED PROGRAM WOULD BE OFFERED TO INMATES ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS AND WOULD CONSIST OF SIX WEEKLY CLASSES. THE PROGRAM WOULD PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THE ENTIRE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND DETAILS OF THE PAROLE PROCESS. AMONG THE TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED ARE THE PAROLE PLAN, PAROLE CONDITIONS, THE ROLES OF THE PAROLEE AND THE PAROLE SUPERVISOR, AND FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO SUCCESS ON PAROLE. THE REPORT INCLUDES A BRIEF ASSESSMENT OF PAROLE PROBLEMS IN PENNSYLVANIA, SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPLEMENTING THE PAROLE EDUCATION PROGRAM ON A PILOT BASIS AT ONE INSTITUTION, AND SAMPLE COPIES OF A CLASS EVALUATION FORM AND A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION.
