Annotation: THIS MANUAL IS PREPARED FOR RETAIL MERCHANTS TO PROVIDE THEM WITH A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS RELATING TO THE APPREHENSION AND PROSECUTION OF RETAIL THIEVES.
Abstract: THE MANUAL EMPHASIZES THAT EFFECTIVE RETAIL CRIME PREVENTION CAN ONLY START WHEN RETAILERS KNOW HOW TO PROSECUTE AND APPREHEND RETAIL THIEVES. DISCUSSION OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF SHOPLIFTING LAWS IS ACCOMPANIED BY AN EXPLANATION OF THE LANGUAGE OF THE LAW. PRACTICAL GUIDELINES ARE GIVEN FOR OBSERVING THE CRIME AND APPREHENDING, ARRESTING, OR DETAINING SUSPECTS. INVESTIGATION DURING DETENTION OR AFTER ARREST IS DISCUSSED. POINTERS ARE OFFERED FOR FILING COMPLAINTS, FOR PROCEEDING WITH THE PROSECUTION, AND FOR AVOIDING LAWSUITS IN THE AREAS OF FALSE ARREST, FALSE IMPRISONMENT, MALICIOUS PROSECUTION, ASSAULT AND BATTERY, AND SLANDER. THE MANUAL ALSO DISCUSSES HOW TO HANDLE JUVENILE SUSPECTS. THE MANUAL ALSO DISCUSSES HOW TO HANDLE JUVENILE SUSPECTS. STEPS FOR REDUCING INTERNAL THEFT UNDERSCORE THE IMPORTANCE OF JOB APPLICANT SCREENING. APPLICATIONS, BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS, HIRING, AND USE OF THE POLYGRAPH ARE DISCUSSED. USE OF EMPLOYEE CONTRACTS AND RULES AND REGULATIONS IN HELPING CONTROL EMPLOYEE THEFT ARE DESCRIBED, AND DIRECTIONS FOR INVESTIGATING AND PROSECUTING EMPLOYEES WHO STEAL ARE PROVIDED. A GLOSSARY AND ATTACHMENTS CONTAINING AN INTERVIEW REPORT, A CONFESSION AND ADMISSIONS STATEMENT, A CIVIL RELEASE, AN EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION, AND A LIST OF SUPPORTING MATERIALS ON SHOPLIFTING ARE SUPPLIED.
