Abstract: THE BOOK IS DESIGNED FOR USE IN A FIRST COURSE ON STATISTICS FOR UNDERGRADUATES IN SOCIOLOGY AND RELATED FIELDS. ALTHOUGH NOT NECESSARY TO ITS UNDERSTANDING, THE VOLUME IS MORE EASILY COMPREHENDED BY STUDENTS WITH COLLEGE ALGEBRA AND SOME BACKGROUND IN SOCIOLOGY. FOLLOWING A BRIEF ESSAY ON THE HISTORY OF STATISTICS, THE BOOK PRESENTS BASIC CONCEPTS AND METHODS OF DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS AND INFERENTIAL STATISTICS. THE CHAPTERS ON DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS PRESENT THE NATURE OF STATISTICAL DATA AND FACTORS AFFECTING THEIR ACCURACY, FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS, MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY, MEASURES OF VARIATION, AND MEASURES OF CORRELATION. THE CHAPTERS ON INFERENTIAL STATISTICS DISCUSS PROBABILITY STATEMENTS, SAMPLING, STATISTICAL ESTIMATION, AND HYPOTHESIS TESTING. PROBLEMS AND QUESTIONS ARE PRESENTED AT THE END OF EACH SECTION IN EVERY CHAPTER. EXTENSIVE TABLES, FIGURES, CHAPTER REFERENCE LISTS, AN INDEX OF NAMES, AN INDEX OF SUBJECTS, AND AN APPENDIX PRESENTING EXTENSIVE TABLES ARE INCLUDED. FOR THE MANUAL CONTAINING SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS PRESENTED, SEE NCJ 67050. (CFW)
