Annotation: THIS INSTRUCTOR'S MANUAL ACCOMPANIES A SERIES OF SIX POLICE TRAINING FILMS ILLUSTRATING CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SKILLS NECESSARY IN POLICE WORK.
Abstract: IT BEGINS WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FILMS, PROVIDES INSTRUCTIONS FOR THEIR USE, AND SUPPLIES A CURRICULUM OUTLINE WITH DISCUSSION QUESTIONS PERTINENT TO EACH. THE PROGRAM IS INTENDED FOR STUDENTS AT POLICE ACADEMIES; ON INSERVICE TRAINING; OR IN ACADEMIC POLICE SCIENCE, SOCIOLOGY, OR PSYCHOLOGY COURSES. THE MATERIAL PROVIDES OFFICERS WITH INSIGHT AND A WORKING UNDERSTANDING REGARDING THE NATURE OF CITIZEN AGGRESSION AND VIOLENCE, PARTICULARLY FROM THOSE UNDERGOING EXTREME EMOTIONAL STRESS, THUS MAXIMIZING OFFICER SURVIVAL AND MINIMIZING THE POSSIBILITY OF ASSAULT AND INJURY TO OFFICERS AND CITIZENS. CONFLICT MANAGEMENT REPRESENTS THE MOST UP-TO-DATE APPROACH FOR THE HANDLING OF DESPERATE SITUATIONS ENCOUNTERED IN THE COURSE OF POLICE RESPONSE TO DISTURBANCE CALLS. THE FILM SERIES ATTEMPTS TO PORTRAY OFFICERS AT VARIOUS STAGES OF LEARNING THE CONFLICT MANAGEMENT APPROACH TO DISPUTE HANDLING. EXCERPTS ARE SHOWN OF THE WAY OFFICERS HANDLE SITUATIONS PRIOR TO TRAINING AND AFTER TRAINING. THE EPISODES ILLUSTRATED IN THE SERIES ARE RECREATED OUT OF ACTUAL FIELD SITUATIONS. THE FIRST FILM POINTS OUT THE GRAVE DANGERS INHERENT IN DISTURBANCE CALLS; THE SECOND ILLUSTRATES POLICE ARRIVAL AT THE CALL AND CONTACT WITH THE DISTURBANTS IN A MANNER THAT MINIMIZES POTENTIAL INJURY OR FATALITY. IN OTHER FILMS, POLICE OFFICERS GAIN CONTROL OF THE SITUATION WITHOUT CONTRIBUTING TO CRISIS ESCALATION; OFFICERS IDENTIFY CONFLICT CAUSES THROUGH A PROCESS OF CALM, ORGANIZED INFORMATION GATHERING; AND ILLUSTRATE CONFLICT RESOLUTION TECHNIQUES INVOLVED IN NEGOTIATING UNDERLYING EMOTIONAL ISSUES. THE FINAL FILM DEMONATRATES ASSISTANCE TO DISPUTANTS, WHOSE PROBLEMS GO BEYOND LAW ENFOREMENT CONCERNS WITH REFERRAL TO APPROPRIATE COMMUNITY AGENCIES WHICH OFFER SPECIFIC SOCIAL SERVICES. SUPPLIED IN THE MANUAL ARE AN OUTLINE FOR SETTING UP REFERRAL AND CUSTOM REFERRAL SERVICES, A BIBLIOGRAPHY, A CONFLICT MANAGEMENT FLOW DIAGRAM, AND A REFERRAL AGENCY HANDBOOK FOR THE SANTA MONICA POLICE DEPARTMENT (CALIFORNIA).
