Annotation: A 74-YEAR OLD NARRATOR SUGGESTS WAYS SENIOR CITIZENS CAN PROTECT THEIR HARD-EARNED DOLLARS AND DESCRIBES SOME OF THE MORE COMMON CON SCHEMES AND FRAUDS.
Abstract: IN THIS FIRST OF A FOUR-PART SERIES ON CRIME PREVENTION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS, THE NARRATOR SUGGESTS THAT RETIRED PERSONS PAY THEIR BILLS WITH A CHECK OR MONEY ORDER, AVOID KEEPING LARGE AMOUNTS OF CASH IN THE HOME, AND USE THE DIRECT DEPOSIT SYSTEM FOR SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS. SEVERAL COMMON CON GAMES ARE EXAMINED, INCLUDING THE PIGEON DROP SCHEME IN WHICH CON ARTISTS POSE AS MONEY-FINDERS, OR THE GYPSY SWITCH SCHEME IN WHICH A GYPSY STEALS MONEY WHILE PROMISING TO BLESS IT. SENIOR CITIZENS ARE URGED TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR HEALTH THROUGH REGULAR MEDICAL CHECKUPS AND TO AVOID QUACK MEDICINES, UNNECESSARY PILLS, AND WORTHLESS MACHINES. THE FILM ALSO CAUTIONS ITS AUDIENCE TO RESIST QUICK INVESTMENTS IN BUSINESS DEALS THAT APPEAR UNUSUALLY PROFITABLE AND TO GET ADVICE FIRST. POLICE SHOULD ALSO BE NOTIFIED OF FRAUDULENT SCHEMES. FOR OTHER FILMS IN THE SERIES, SEE NCJ 67341 AND NCJ 67433-35. (AOP)
