Annotation: THESE TWO STUDIES DETERMINED THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF TIME SERVED TWO SAMPLES OF INMATES AT THE INDIANA STATE PRISON WHO WERE SERVING 2 TO 14 YEARS AND WHO HAD RECEIVED PAROLE AUTHORIZATION.
Abstract: DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM THE MINUTES OF THE INDIANA PAROLE BOARD AND THE CENTRAL OFFICE PACKETS OF THE SUBJECTS. THE DATA INCLUDED FILE NUMBER, MONTH AND YEAR OF ADMISSION INTO THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, MONTH AND YEAR OF PAROLE AUTHORIZATION, ETHNIC GROUP, AND MOST SERIOUS OFFENSE COMMITTED. THE FIRST STUDY INCLUDED 15 SUBJECTS, 11 WHITES AND 4 BLACKS, WHO HAD A SENTENCE LENGTH OF 2 TO 14 YEARS. THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF TIME SERVED WAS 1 YEAR AND 9.1 MONTHS WITH THE SHORTEST BEING 3 MONTHS AND THE LONGEST 11 YEARS AND 2 MONTHS. WHITES AVERAGED 2 YEARS AND 1 MONTH, WHILE BLACKS AVERAGED 10.5 MONTHS. THE SUBJECTS INCLUDED SEVEN PERSONS COMMITTED FOR FORGERY, THREE COMMITTED FOR ASSAULT AND BATTERY WITH INTENT TO KILL, TWO FOR CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT A FORGERY, ONE FOR SODOMY, ONE FOR POSSESSION OF BURGLARY TOOLS, AND ONE FOR CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT THEFT. THE SECOND STUDY CONSISTED OF 22 INMATES, 13 WHITES AND 9 BLACKS, WHO HAD SENTENCE LENGTHS OF 2 TO 21 YEARS. THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF TIME SERVED WAS 5 YEARS AND 1.7 MONTHS WITH THE SHORTEST BEING 1 YEAR AND 4 MONTHS AND THE LONGEST 10 YEARS AND 1 MONTH. WHITES AVERAGED 5 YEARS AND .2 MONTHS, WHILE BLACKS AVERAGED 5 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS. THE SUBJECTS INCLUDED EIGHT PERSONS COMMITTED FOR VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER, SIX FOR MANSLAUGHTER, THREE FOR INCEST, TWO FOR RAPE, TWO FOR ASSAULT AND BATTERY WITH THE INTENT TO SATISFY SEXUAL DESIRES, AND ONE FOR ASSAULT AND BATTERY ON A CHILD UNDER 12. TABLES ARE INCLUDED.
