Abstract: OF THE 57 ESCAPES RECORDED IN 1978, 21 WERE ESCAPES OVER A FENCE OR WALL, 24 WERE WALKAWAY ESCAPES, 8 OCCURRED DURING FURLOUGH, 3 WERE DURING TRIPS, AND 1 WAS BECAUSE OF AN ERRONEOUS RELEASE TO BOND. THE NUMBER OF ESCAPES FROM BUENA VISTA AND RIFLE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, AND FROM THE COLORADO CORRECTIONAL CENTER SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASED OVER 1977. HOWEVER, THE NUMBER OF ESCAPES FROM DELTA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY DECREASED FROM EIGHT ESCAPES TO ONE ESCAPE. THE FIRST 3 1/2 MONTHS OF 1979 HAVE SEEN A RELATIVELY LOW NUMBER OF ESCAPES. THE MAJORITY OF 1978 ESCAPES OCCURRED IN GROUPS AS 31 INMATES ESCAPED IN ONLY 10 INCIDENTS. THE MOST CRITICAL PARTS OF THE YEAR FOR POTENTIAL ESCAPES WERE MARCH, APRIL, MAY, JULY, AUGUST, AND OCTOBER. THE REPORT INCLUDES TABLES ON ESCAPE RATIOS FOR 1977 AND 1978, GROUP SIZE, AND TYPES OF ESCAPES BROKEN DOWN FOR EACH OF THE SIX INSTITUTIONS FOR 1973 THROUGH 1978. ALSO INCLUDED IS A GRAPH INDICATING THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS. ABI JLF
