Annotation: AN ANALYSIS OF VICTIMIZATION IN BEDFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND, DURING 1978, EMPHASIZING WAYS IN WHICH RESIDENTS CAN LESSEN THE RISK OF BEING VICTIMIZED, IS PRESENTED.
Abstract: THE ANALYSIS ENCOMPASSES 4,706 VICTIMS OF VIOLATIONS OF THE PERSON OR OF THE HOME, AND IS BASED ON A REVIEW OF POLICE RECORDS. TABLES AND CHARTS SHOW THE INCIDENCE OF THE CRIMES MENTIONED IN THE TITLE FOR VARIOUS AGE GROUPS AND BY SEX, TIME OF DAY, AND DAY OF WEEK (WEEKDAY OR WEEKEND). THE ACCOMPANYING NARRATIVE BRINGS OUT PATTERNS OF RISK AND SUGGEST STEPS THAT MAY BE TAKEN TO AVOID BEING VICTIMIZED. THE REPORT ALSO COMPARES THE RATE OF VICTIMIZATION IN BEDFORDSHIRE WITH THAT IN LONDON AND THE REST OF ENGLAND AND WALES. THIS IS PART ONE OF A TWO-PART SERIES. THE SECOND REPORT WILL ANALYZE 9,000 INCIDENCES OF VICTIMIZATION IN 1977 AND 1978, CHARTING THE SPECIFIC KINDS OF RISK TO WHICH EACH AGE AND SEX GROUP IS PARTICULARLY LIABLE. PART ONE ALSO INCLUDES A FOREWORD BY THE CHIEF CONSTABLE OF THE BEDFORDSHIRE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND A LIST OF OTHER PUBLICATIONS BY THE CHRISTIAN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION.
