Annotation: A NATIONAL COLLEGE FOR CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYERS WAS ESTABLISHED TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF AMERICAN TRIAL ADVOCACY, ESPECIALLY WITH REGARD TO THE PERFORMANCE OF COURT-APPOINTED COUNSEL.
Abstract: PRIMARILY FUNDED BY LEAA AND SPONSORED BY THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION, THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYERS, AND THE NATIONAL LEGAL AID AND DEFENDER ASSOCIATION, THE NATIONAL COLLEGE FOR CRIMINAL DEFENSE OFFERS A CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM CONDUCTED ON A NATIONAL LEVEL AND AIMED AT STRENGTHENING THE TRIAL SKILLS OF CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYERS. THIS POSTGRADUATE LAW SCHOOL SERVES BOTH PUBLIC DEFENDERS AND PRIVATE PRACTITIONERS FREQUENTLY APPOINTED IN INDIGENT CRIMINAL CASES OR DESIRING SUCH APPOINTMENT. THE COLLEGE HAS DEVELOPED A REPUTATION FOR QUALITY EDUCATION AND IS ON ITS WAY TO FINANCIAL SELF-SUFFICIENCY. A FACULTY WITH IMPRESSIVE ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS EMPLOYS A VARIETY OF COURSES AND SEMINARS TO TRAIN GRADUATE STUDENTS INCLUDING ADMINISTRATORS IN PUBLIC DEFENDER OFFICES AND AGENCIES) A VARIETY OF COURSES AND SEMINARS. THE COLLEGE ALSO SELLS TRAINING EQUIPMENT (ESPECIALLY VIDEOTAPES ON TRIAL TECHNIQUES) AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS, INCLUDING A CRIMINAL LAW DIGEST. ITS TRAINING METHODOLOGY INCREASINGLY EMPHASIZES THE ROLE-PLAYING VERSUS THE LECTURE FORMAT. THE COLLEGE'S NATIONAL INSTITUTES PLANNED FOR 1980-1981 WILL DEAL WITH TOPICS SUCH AS THE INSANITY DEFENSE, JURY SELECTION, AND ADVANCED CROSS-EXAMINATION. ITS REGULAR PROGRAMS, EXEMPLIFIED BY THE DESCRIPTION OF A TYPICAL TRAINING PERIOD, INCLUDE ORIENTATION LECTURES AND CLOSELY MONITORED ROLE-PLAYING BY THE TRAINEES. BIOGRAPHIES OF THE COLLEGE FACULTY AND ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON 1980-1981 PROGRAMS ARE GIVEN. (LGR)
