Annotation: THIS REPORT BY THE FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE (FOP) GIVES 1980 SALARY AND WORKING CONDITIONS DATA FOR POLICE IN CITIES, COUNTIES, AND STATES AND BRIEFLY DESCRIBES THE FOP.
Abstract: THE FOP IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION OF POLICE OFFICERS OF ALL RANKS, INCORPORATED IN PENNSYLVANIA. ITS SEGMENTS ARE A NATIONAL LODGE, STATE LODGES COMPOSED OF 3 OR MORE SUBORDINATE LODGES, AND SUBORDINATE LODGES OF 10 OR MORE POLICE OFFICERS. THE NATIONAL LODGE LOBBIES FOR LEGISLATION BENEFICIAL TO POLICE AND HAS SPONSORED PENSION PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES OF POLICE OFFICERS KILLED WHILE ENFORCING FEDERAL LAWS; IT IS PRESENTLY STUDYING HUMAN RIGHTS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT WITH THE U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE. IT ALSO PUBLISHES THIS ANNUAL SURVEY OF SALARIES AND WORKING CONDITIONS OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS. DATA ARE LISTED FOR POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN COUNTIES, STATES, AND OVER 1,000 CITIES RANGING IN SIZE FROM UNDER 10,000 TO OVER 1,000,000 PERSONS. SALARY DATA COVERS MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM SALARIES FOR POLICE CHIEFS, CAPTAINS, LIEUTENANTS, SERGEANTS, DETECTIVES, AND PATROL OFFICERS. FIGURES SHOW THAT SALARIES INCREASE AS THE SIZE OF THE JURISDICTION INCREASES. OTHER INFORMATION COVERS LENGTH OF THE WORK WEEK, NUMBERS OF OFFICERS IN EACH JURISDICTION, VACATION, UNIFORM ALLOWANCE, MEDICAL INSURANCE, AND OTHER BENEFITS, AND PENSION INFORMATION.
