Annotation: A STUDY OF 899 INMATES FROM THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS RELEASED TO PAROLE, WORK RELEASE, AND SUPERVISED EARNED RELEASE PROGRAMS AFTER JULY 1978 SHOWS THAT MOST ARE FIRST-TIME PROPERTY OFFENDERS.
Abstract: FIRST OFFENDERS MAKE UP AT LEAST 75 PERCENT OF ALL INMATES RELEASED TO PAROLE AND 92 PERCENT AND 89 PERCENT OF THOSE RELEASED TO WORK RELEASE AND SUPERVISED EARNED RELEASE, RESPECTIVELY. STATEWIDE, VIOLENT OFFENDERS MAKE UP ABOUT 56 PERCENT OF THE INMATE POPULATION AND PROPERTY OFFENDERS 44 PERCENT. HOWEVER, PROPERTY OFFENDERS CONSTITUTE 70 PERCENT OF THOSE ON PAROLE, 67 PERCENT OF THOSE ON WORK RELEASE, AND 56 PERCENT OF THOSE ON SUPERVISED EARNED RELEASE. THIS STUDY DRAWS A MODAL PROFILE FOR EACH RELEASE POPULATION AND THEN GIVES DETAILED CHARTS SHOWING POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS. THESE CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDE RACE; SEX; TYPE OF CRIME; MARITAL STATUS; LENGTH OF LONGEST EMPLOYMENT (IN MONTHS); EDUCATION; TESTED READING, WRITING, AND ARITHMETIC LEVELS; AND LENGTH OF STAY IN AN INSTITUTION.
Index Term(s): Crime Statistics; Inmate statistics; Mississippi; Parole statistics; Work release
