Annotation: A REPORT IS PRESENTED OF AN INTERNATIONAL COURSE THAT FOCUSED ON THE ROLE OF POLICE IN MODERN SOCIETY AND ON PRESERVING INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE LIBERTIES WHILE MAINTAINING ORDER AND JUSTICE.
Abstract: THE REPORT SUMMARIZES THE DISCUSSION AND PRESENTS A BRIEF OUTLINE AND TIMETABLE OF THE TOPICS OF THE INDIVIDUAL WORKSHOPS WHICH SOUGHT TO GIVE SPECIALISTS AND TECHNICIANS A SURVEY OF NEW POLICE TECHNIQUES AND CONCEPTS. ATTENDED BY 59 POLICE AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE AUTHORITIES FROM 17 COUNTRIES, MOSTLY FROM WESTERN EUROPE AND MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES, THE CONFERENCE DEALT ALSO WITH CRIME PREVENTION, POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS, AND THE WAYS INDIVIDUAL COUNTRIES HAVE GUARANTEED THE RIGHTS OF THE ACCUSED. THE POLICE ROLE IS SEEN AS CLOSELY RELATED TO THE POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL SITUATION OF EACH COUNTRY. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO THE WAYS TERRORISM AFFECTS THE MAINTENANCE OF ORDER AND THE FREE FLOW OF INFORMATION. A LIST OF PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE COURSE IS PROVIDED, AS WELL AS A DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COURSE'S CHIEF SPONSOR, THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIOLOGICAL AND PENAL AND PENITENTIARY RESEARCH AND STUDIES CENTER OF MESSINA, ITALY. NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF COURSE PARTICIPANTS ARE INCLUDED.
