Annotation: THIS MANUAL IS INTENDED TO HELP PHARMACISTS AND HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATORS IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS DESIGN AND MANAGE PHARMACY SERVICES AS EFFICIENTLY AS POSSIBLE WHILE COMPLYING WITH LEGAL AND PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS.
Abstract: THE MATERIAL IS OFFERED AS A REFERENCE TOOL RATHER THAN A STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURES GUIDE. A SET OF GUIDELINES AND ILLUSTRATIVE MATERIALS COVER ALL ASPECTS OF PHARMACY ADMINISTRATION AND DRUG DISTRIBUTION. THE MANUAL DISCUSSES STANDARDS AND LAW, THE PROCUREMENT OF PHARMACEUTICALS, DISPENSING AND DISTRIBUTING MEDICATION, PATIENT RECORDS, THE ROLE OF THE HEALTH CARE STAFF, THE ORGANIZATION OF PHARMACY SERVICES THROUGHOUT A CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, AND PHARMACY ADMINISTRATION. INCLUDED ARE EQUIPMENT LISTS, LISTS OF DRUGS WHICH SHOULD BE KEPT ON HAND ROUTINELY, SPECIAL DRUG NEEDS, AND PHARMACY TASKS. A BIBLIOGRAPHY CONTAINS 90 REFERENCES FROM PROFESSIONAL LITERATURE. APPENDIXES PRESENT THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HOSPITAL PHARMACISTS (ASHP) STATEMENT ON HOSPITAL DRUG CONTROL SYSTEMS; ASHP GUIDELINES FOR THE INSTITUTIONAL USE OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES; ASHP STANDARDS FOR PHARMACY PRACTICE; THE STANDARDS OF PHARMACEUTICAL SERVICES ISSUED BY THE JOINT COMMISSION ON ACCREDITATION OF HOSPITALS; TWO STATEMENTS REGARDING THE REPACKING OF DRUGS INTO SMALLER UNITS; PATIENT MEDICATION RECORDS AND DRUG PROFILES; SPECIFIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES FOR PHARMACIES IN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING; AND A 'TWO-MINUTE SELF-EVALUATION' OF A PHARMACY SERVICE.
