Annotation: ADOLESCENT SUICIDE IS DISCUSSED WITH EMPHASIS ON STATISTICS, CAUSES, DANGER SIGNS, AND METHODS OF PREVENTION.
Abstract: AN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF A SUICIDE PREVENTION AND CRISIS CENTER EXPLAINS THAT ADOLESCENT SUICIDE RATES ARE HIGHER THAN THOSE OF ADULTS AND THAT THE RATES HAVE BEEN INCREASING INTERNATIONALLY. STATISTICS ARE QUOTED AND ESTIMATES ARE MADE ON THE RELATIONS OF THE ACTUAL NUMBERS TO THE REPORTED NUMBERS, AND OF COMPLETED SUICIDES TO ATTEMPTED SUICIDES. THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF ADOLESCENT SUICIDE, A GREAT LOSS OF ANY SORT, IS DESCRIBED, AND THE DANGER SIGNS OF ACCOMPANYING SEVERE DEPRESSIONS ARE REVIEWED. FINALLY, PREVENTIVE MEASURES, SUCH AS TALKING OPENLY WITH YOUTHS WHO ARE CONTEMPLATING SUICIDE, AND THE BENEFITS OF PREVENTIVE TRAINING FOR PERSONNEL IN DETENTION HOMES ARE CONSIDERED. THE AUDIOTAPE CASSETTE IS SUITABLE FOR GENERAL AUDIENCES. A TABLE OF CONTENTS IS INCLUDED, BUT OTHER SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS ARE NOT PROVIDED. FOR RELATED TAPES, SEE NCJ 69273-76 AND 69278-85.
Index Term(s): Audiovisual aids; Behavior patterns; Juveniles; Suicide; Workshops and seminars
