Annotation: TABLES AND TEXT RELATE THE ACTIVITIES, DEVELOPMENTS, AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE FORCE FOR THE PERIOD JULY, 1, 1977 TO JUNE 30, 1978.
Abstract: AN OVERVIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENTS OF THE FORCE COVERS THE OCCURRENCE OF RIOTS AND THE GENERAL AREAS OF CRIME ON WHICH THE FORCE CONCENTRATED ITS EFFORTS DURING THE PERIOD REPORTED. PERSONNEL CONSIDERATIONS NOTED INCLUDE CHANGES IN COMMAND, DEATHS, HONORABLE MENTIONS, AWARDS, AND COMMENDATIONS. ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW POSTS, RECRUITMENT METHODS AND NUMBERS, AND ACTIVITIES INVOLVING THE RESERVE POLICE FORCE ARE REPORTED. COMPLETE COURSE LISTINGS FOR POLICE TRAINING CLASSES OFFERED IN 1977-78 ARE PRESENTED. TABLES PROVIDE INFORMATION ON OFFENSES AND INFRINGEMENTS OF THE LAW ACCORDING TO THE OFFENSE CLASSIFICATION, THE NUMBER OF CASES REPORTED, CHANGES IN SITUATIONS BETWEEN 1975-76 DATA AND 1977-78 DATA, AND THE PERCENTAGE OF CASES SOLVED. OTHER POLICE ACTIVITIES EXAMINED INCLUDE THOSE INVOLVING THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE DOG SCHOOL, THE SOUTH AFRICAN CRIMINAL BUREAU, THE COMMERCIAL BRANCH, THE FORENSIC SCIENCE LABORATORY, INTERNAL SECURITY, AND RIOT SQUADS. A NEW SYSTEM IN RADIO COMMUNICATIONS IS DESCRIBED, AND THE BORDER STOCK THEFT UNIT AND THE FIREARM UNITS ARE EXAMINED. INFORMATION REGARDING POLICE STATIONS AND OTHER ACCOMMODATIONS IS GIVEN, AND TYPES OF TRANSPORT USED BY THE FORCE ARE LISTED. FINALLY, MENTION IS MADE OF POLICE STATIONS RUN BY NONWHITES, EXTRA-DEPARTMENTAL DUTIES, AND THE SPIRITUAL CARE OF FORCE MEMBERS BY CHAPLAINS AND THE WELFARE SERVICE.
