Annotation: THIS 1979 REPORT ON JUVENILE COURT ACTIVITY IN TEXAS COVERS THE TEXAS COURT STRUCTURE AND JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM, RECENT JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM DEVELOPMENTS, AND JUVENILE COURT AND PROBATION ACTIVITIES.
Abstract: THE JUVENILE COURT'S ROLE WITHIN THE COURT SYSTEM IS OUTLINED. ACTIVITIES FOR THE TEXAS SUPREME COURT, THE COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS, AND OTHER COURTS ARE DESCRIBED. LEGISLATION AND RECENT U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISIONS UPHOLDING CHILDREN'S RIGHTS OR ESTABLISHING JUVENILE CODE PROCEDURES ARE EXAMINED AS THEY PERTAIN TO TAKING A CHILD INTO CUSTODY OR REFERRING CHILDREN TO JUVENILE COURT. ALSO CONSIDERED IN THE REPORT ARE COURT INTAKE, TYPES OF JUVENILE HEARINGS, APPEALS, THE STRUCTURING OF TEXAS JUVENILE JUSTICE THROUGH JUVENILE BOARDS, DETENTION FACILITIES, PROBATION, AND THE STATE'S JUVENILE CORRECTION AGENCY. OTHER RECENT COURT DECISIONS AND LEGISLATION AFFECTING JUVENILE JUSTICE EXAMINED RELATE TO OBTAINING CONFESSIONS, ADVISING JUVENILES OF THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, AND ACCOMPLICE TESTIMONY AT TRIAL. JUVENILE COURT STATISTICS DISTINGUISH DELINQUENT VERSUS STATUS OFFENSE BEHAVIOR. AGES, SEX, AND OFFENSES OF THE 76,000 CHILDREN REFERRED TO THE COURT IN 1979 ARE DETAILED. FURTHER REPORTS GIVE JUVENILE PROBATION DATA BY COUNTY AND CRIME CATEGORY, AND BY AGE, SEX, AND RACE OF THE OFFENDER. COUNTY JUVENILE COURT REPORTS COVER NUMBERS OF DISPOSITIONS AND OTHER DATA. THE BULK OF THE TEXT IS MADE UP BY STATISTICS. TITLE III OF THE FAMILY CODE, TABLES, CHARTS, AND MAPS ARE INCLUDED.
