Annotation: PREPARED TO HELP NEW RESIDENTS BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE RULES, REGULATIONS, AND HISTORY OF THE VIRGINIA CORRECTIONAL CENTER FOR WOMEN, THIS MANUAL IS PRESENTED TO NEW INMATES UPON THEIR ARRIVAL AT THE FACILITY.
Abstract: THE MANUAL INTRODUCES THE INMATES TO THE FACILITY'S PHILOSOPHY BY STATING THAT THE INSTITUTION STRIVES TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT SIMILAR TO COMMUNITY LIFE AND THAT POSITIVE RESULTS CAN OCCUR DUE TO THE INMATES' ATTITUDES AND EFFORTS. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THE CENTER IS TO ENABLE INCARCERATED WOMEN TO DEVELOP AND USE THEIR RESOURCES SO THAT THEY CAN ADJUST TO THEIR COMMUNITIES WHEN THEY RETURN. THE MANUAL GIVES THE HISTORY OF THE VIRGINIA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY FOR WOMEN, THE ARRANGEMENT OF LIVING QUARTERS (COTTAGES), AND RULES OF INMATE CONDUCT. MEDICAL FACILITIES AND STAFF, DRUG COUNSELING, AND THE INSTITUTIONAL CLASSIFICATION CMMITTEE ARE DESCRIBED. A CHAPTER ON THE RECEPTION UNIT DISCUSSES THE ADMISSION AND RECEPTION PROCESS, WHILE ANOTHER SECTION DESCRIBES THE RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. OTHER SECTIONS COVER THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT, RELIGIUS WORK, AND WORK DEPARTMENTS, AS WELL AS THE FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT. ADDITIONALLY, THE MANUALS COVER THE PROGRESSIVE HOUSING SYSTEM, MOVEMENTS AND DEMOTIONS, FURLOUGHS, ITEMS APPROVED FOR INMATES, AND VISTING REGULATIONS. THE FINAL CHAPTER REVIEWS THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE AND THE STUDENT CODE OF ETHICS.
