Annotation: THIS FILM OF WOMEN SERVING PRISON TERMS OF 4 YEARS TO LIFE ARGUES THAT THESE PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO, AND THAT THE NEEDS OF LONG TERM PRISONERS ARE OFTEN NOT CONSIDERED IN CORRECTIONS LEGISLATION.
Abstract: THE FILM WAS COPRODUCED BY THE LONG TERMERS COMMITTEE OF THE BEDFORD HILLS CORREECTIONAL FACILITIES, N.Y., WHICH IS TRYING TO REFORM PRESENT STATE LEGISLATION TO MEET THE NEEDS OF LONG TERM PRISONERS. WOMEN ARE SHOWN PLAYING CARDS, MEETING WITH THEIR FAMILIES, AND SAYING GOODBYE TO A CLOSE FRIEND. PROBLEMS OF ISOLATION AND DEPENDENCY CREATED BY PRISON CONDITIONS ARE NOTED, AND VIEWERS ARE REMINDED THAT PRESENT CORRECTIONAL LEGISLATION OFTEN CONCENTRATES ON BENEFITS FOR SHORT TERM PRISONERS, TO THE DETRIMENT OF THOSE SERVING LONGER SENTENCES. THE FILM ALSO INCLUDES SOME OF THE POETRY WRITTEN BY WOMEN SERVING LONG TERM SENTENCES.
Index Term(s): Correctional reform; Female inmates; Inmate grievances; New York; Prisoner's rights
