Annotation: Preventive measures to improve school security both during and after hours are presented in this five-part course, which is part of a seven-part curriculum on school violence and vandalism.
Abstract: A short introductory unit discusses the goals of security, protection of property and protection of people. The second session explores ways in which administrators, teachers, students, support staff, parents, and community residents can contribute to the security of the school environment. Examples of programs are provided, such as teacher patrols, live-in custodians, and neighborhood watch projects. The unit on physical plant security covers crime prevention through physical design of doors and windows. Systems to control keys, criteria for security patrols, inventory control, and property identification are also described. In addition, participants plan an alarm protection scheme for a hypothetical school situation. The fourth session concerns designing or upgrading school security programs. Following a needs assessment, staff should focus on staffing requirements, qualifications and training for security staff, development of policies and procedures, reporting systems, and staff development for nonsecurity staff. The final seminar is targeted toward smaller school districts. It aims to help them generate and share low cost strategies for improving security. Participants describe their particular problems and then work in groups to develop solutions. Each unit contains an agenda with time limits, worksheets, bibliographies, and background materials which consist of articles, checklists, and sample forms.
