Annotation: This report covers 2 years of statewide consumer protection activity by the Consumer Law Section of the Attorney General's Office in Los Angeles in many areas of manufacturing, marketing, and customer services.
Abstract: In 1979 and 1980 investigation of consumer fraud and legal assistance to the victims of misleading and illegal selling practices were provided by the Consumer Law Section for the entire State of California. The following fields were investigated: foreclosures, lien contracts, and home improvement; seller-assisted marketing plans (e.g., work-at-home and distributorship schemes); multilevel companies, endless chains, and pyramids; discount buying clubs; invention companies; energy frauds (e.g., companies selling fraudulent energy devices); major retail chain overcharges; Las Vegas vacation certificates; warranties; and referral sales. In all these areas, the Consumer Law Section obtained court judgments against consumer rights violators; it also sponsored consumer protection legislation. Judgments and penalties were obtained against health care service companies and automobile dealers. The Consumer Law Section covered many other areas not included in this report, which contains only highlights of the section's activities.
