Annotation: This volume highlights areas of agreement among four national standards groups on standards regarding youth advocacy and due process. This is the fourth volume of a series of comparative analyses of national juvenile justice standards and pertinent provisions of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act, as amended through 1977.
Abstract: The four organizations are the National Advisory Committee for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Task Force on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention of the National Advisory Committee on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals, the Institute of Judicial Administration/American Bar Association Juvenile Justice Standards Project, and the American Correctional Association/Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. The volume identifies linkages between the general directions of the JJDP Act and the detailed formulations of the standards groups, making comparisons on key issues in order to clarify policymakers' options. Standards addressing the organization of advocacy efforts and techniques for advocating improved services for juveniles are analyzed in detail. Summary charts highlighting general areas of agreement among the four sets address procedural safeguards recommended at eight critical stages of case processing: intervention, diversion, intake, preadjudicatory proceedings, adjudication, disposition, appeals and other forms of postdispositional review, and corrections. In each area, the volume examines suggested protections in delinquency, noncriminal misbehavior, and abuse of neglect cases. Matrixes of interrelated standards and a detailed analysis of the standards' positions will be published in a forthcoming supplementary volume.
