Annotation: Statistics on New York State inmates committed in 1983 cover a variety of legal variables (e.g., commitment offense and prior criminal record) and extralegal variables (e.g., age or ethnicity). Data also compare the aggregate characteristics of the 1983 commitments with the inmate commitments of previous years.
Abstract: The total 1983 admissions are reported; other statistics on inmate legal variables encompass commitment offense type, sentence, prior adult criminal record, region of commitment, first and second felony offenders, and drug use among commitments. Demographic information covers inmate age, ethnicity, educational attainment, occupational status, marital status, and country of birth. Highlights of the data are presented in a narrative section. Detailed data are presented in 13 figures and 82 tables.
