Abstract: Tables and explanatory information examine relationships among the average daily prisoner population and year (1973, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983), type of custody, length or type of sentence, and sex. Also presented are statistics on remand and direct receptions to penal institutions by crime, sex, age, and type of custody. Data on fine defaulter receptions also are presented by crime, age, and sex. From these data, three main points emerge. The average number of prisoners in 1983 was 5,052, about 160 more than in 1982 and only 10 less than the 10-year peak recorded in 1978. The average number held in remand increased sharply in 1982 and continued to rise in 1983 to 863. Finally, fewer persons were received into custody in 1983 than in 1982, both on remand and to serve sentences. An appendix offers additional information on data collection and offense classification, as well as two references.
