Title: STUDY OF CONFLICT INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN POLICE AND PROBATION OFFICERS IN NEW YORK, CALIFORNIA AND NEW MEXICO
  Author(s): E RYAN
  Date Published: 1972
  Page Count: 104
Annotation: FOUR GENERAL CLASSIFICATIONS OF CONFLICT ARE DEFINED AND APPLIED TO THIS STUDY OF REAL-LIFE INTERAGENCY RELATIONSHIPS IN NASSAU COUNTY (NY), SAN DIEGO (CA), AND ALBUQUERQUE (NM).
Abstract: THE CLASSIFICATIONS OF CONFLICT INCLUDE DISSENSUS, ESTEEM AND STATUS DISCREPANCY, DIFFERENTIAL OPERATIONAL TASKS AND INTERESTS, AND PERCEPTUAL DISTORTION. THE FIRST SECTION DESCRIBES THE 57-ITEM QUESTIONNAIRE USED TO ASSESS ATTITUDES AND OPINIONS OF POLICE AND PROBATION OFFICERS FROM THREE DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE COUNTRY. THE METHODS USED IN SELECTING AND PRETESTING ITEMS ARE DETAILED IN THIS SECTION AS WELL AS METHODS USED IN COMBINING INDIVIDUAL ITEMS INTO VARIOUS SCALES. SECTION TWO DETAILS THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM NASSAU COUNTY, AND SECTION THREE DESCRIBES RESPONSES FROM POLICE AND PROBATION OFFICERS IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO, AND SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA. THE METHOD OF ANALYZING THE DATA FROM ALL THESE LOCATIONS IS CONSISTENT TO ALLOW FOR COMPARISON OF RESULTS BETWEEN THESE THREE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY. THESE COMPARISON RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN SECTION FOUR. THE INTERVIEW RESULTS (CONDUCTED IN NASSAU COUNTY) ARE PRESENTED IN SECTION FIVE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
