The Western Asia Regional Preparatory Meeting, held in December 1983, considered topics for the agenda of the Seventh United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, scheduled for 1985.
Abstract
Discussions centered on new dimensions of criminality and crime prevention in the Arab world and guiding principles for crime prevention and criminal justice in the context of development and a changing international economic order. Discussions of criminal justice processes and their evaluation emphasized the need for a systematic approach to the administration of justice that would facilitate more effective coordination of activity among the various sectors, ensure greater consistency, and maximize adaptability to change. Additional discussion considered victimization in terms of factors contributing to increased vulnerability, the effects of victimization, and the criminal justice system response to victims. The philosophy, goals, and standards of juvenile justice also were considered; the need for greater humanization of the juvenile and criminal justice systems was espoused. Finally, modalities for more effective regional cooperation were considered. A list of documents and participants is appended. 1 note.
