The conference brought together victims, victim advocates, volunteers, prosecutors, judicial and law enforcement personnel, social service and mental health professionals, and tribal leaders to share their knowledge, experiences, and ideas for developing programs that serve the needs of victims in Indian country. The conference focused on four areas: understanding victimization and its cycles, programs and administration, improving intra-agency and interagency cooperation, and crisis intervention and service providers. Presentations focused on the impacts of crime on victims, victim participation in the tribal justice system, victim advocacy and action, violence against women in Indian country, cultural sensitivity and differing approaches to advocacy, and victim and witness services. Workshops focused on gang violence, juvenile justice issues, child abuse and neglect, victim compensation, staff burnout and stress management, the development of interagency protocols to address domestic violence and child abuse, driving under the influence of alcohol, elder abuse, cultural sensitivity, forensic interviews, spiritual healing, tribal laws, methods of holding non-Indian offenders accountable for crimes in Indian country, community crisis response and crisis response teams, and the improvement of Federal and tribal responses to crimes on Indian reservations.
