INTENDED TO PROVIDE A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE NATURE, DISTRIBUTION, AND GROWTH OF CRIME IN MASSACHUSETTS, THIS REPORT INCLUDES STATEWIDE INDEX CRIME DATA FOR 1968-1972, AND PROVIDES ANALYSES OF LOCAL CRIME PATTERNS.
Abstract
THE STATISTICS GIVEN IN THIS REPORT ARE BASED LARGELY ON THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS PUBLISHED BY THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION. THE NUMBER AND DATES OF EACH INDEX OFFENSE REPORTED IN MASSACHUSETTS OVER THE FIVE YEAR PERIOD 1968-1972 ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM; THE 1972 RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES ARE PRESENTED FOR COMPARISON. IT IS NOTED THAT A STEADY INCREASE IN INDEX CRIMES OCCURRED UNTIL 1972, WHEN A DECLINE IN CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY WAS FOUND. THE ANALYSES OF LOCAL CRIME PATTERNS PRESENTED IN THIS REPORT INCLUDE AN ANALYSIS OF CRIME IN BOSTON FROM 1967 TO 1972, AN ANALYSIS OF THE GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF INDEX CRIME IN MASSACHUSETTS SHOWING DISPROPORTIONATELY HIGH RATES IN MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREAS, AND AN ANALYSIS OF CRIME PATTERNS AMONG OTHER MASSACHUSETTS CITIES AND TOWNS.
