DISCUSSION OF THE DESIGN, TEST, AND EVALUATION OF A HELICOPTER HOMING SYSTEM SUITABLE FOR DIRECTION FINDING (DF) AND UTILIZING EXISTING POLICE VHF (VERY HIGH FREQUENCY) TRANSCEIVERS.
Abstract
SYSTEM APPLICATIONS INCLUDE SURVEILLANCE, VEHICLE LOCATION, NAVIGATING AID, AND POLICE JAMMING LOCATOR. VARIOUS DF AND HOMING TECHNIQUES WERE INVESTIGATED USING SEVERAL ANTANNA SYSTEMS AND DETECTION SCHEMES. FIELD TESTS CONDUCTED IN LOS ANGELES REVEALED THAT OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE WAS OBTAINED USING A LOOP ANTENNA AND THE RADIOMETRIC DETECTION PROCESS. USING THIS TECHNIQUE, HOMING CAPABILITY WAS OBTAINED FOR RANGES IN EXCESS OF 35 MILES AND FOR A RADIATED POWER OF APPROXIMATELY 1 WATT.
