INTENDED TO SERVE AS A GUIDE TO THE LEGISLATIVE STATUS OF SELECTED CRIMINAL JUSTICE ISSUES, THIS INDEX CONTAINS CITATIONS OF STATE LAWS ORGANIZED ACCORDING TO THESE MAJOR TOPICS OF INTEREST.
Abstract
CRIMINAL JUSTICE LEGISLATION DEFINES THE CRIMINAL LAWS ON WHICH ENFORCEMENT IS BASED, DIFFERENTIATES THE PENALTY CATEGORIES APPLICABLE TO TYPES OF OFFENSES AND OFFENDERS, AND ESTABLISHES THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF THE SYSTEM WHICH ULTIMATELY PROVIDES ENFORCEMENT, ADJUDICATION, AND CORRECTIONAL SERVICES. TO FACILITATE INTERSTATE EVALUATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE LEGISLATION, THIS CRIMINAL JUSTICE STATUTORY INDEX WAS DEVELOPED. DUE TO THE VARIETY AND SCOPE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE LEGISLATION RECENTLY ENACTED BY STATE LEGISLATURES, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE STATUTORY INDEX NECESSARILY COULD COVER ONLY MAJOR TOPICS CHARACTERIZED BY ABUNDANT INTEREST OR ACTIVITY. BASED ON THESE CRITERIA, THIS INDEX CONTAINS CITATIONS FOR STATE LEGISLATION IN THE AREAS OF HANDGUN CONTROL, CRIME VICTIM COMPENSATION, DECRIMINALIZATION OF VICTIMLESS CRIMES, JUVENILE CODES, ADULT CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS AND FACILITIES, CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, COURT REORGANIZATION, JUDICIAL SELECTION AND REVIEW, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS. WHEN THE COMPLEXITY OF THESE TOPICS REQUIRED A MORE INTENSIVE COVERAGE, MAJOR AREAS WERE SUBDIVIDED INTO SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES. (SNI ABSTRACT)
