Abstract
THE READER IS PRESENTED WITH A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF THE NORMAL ENCOUNTERS FOUND WITHIN THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDIVIDUAL, FROM INFANCY TO THE PERIOD OF YOUNG ADULTHOOD. WITHIN THIS PORTION OF THE BOOK THE READER IS NOT ONLY INTRODUCED TO THE NORMALCY OF CHILDHOOD, BUT IS TAKEN ONE STEP FURTHER INTO THOSE FACTORS RELATING TO PARENTHOOD THAT GREATLY INFLUENCE FUTURE BEHAVIOR OF THE CHILD. ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO SOCIETAL FACTORS INFLUENCING BEHAVIOR, AND HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURAL CHANGES WHICH HAVE HAD A DIRECT EFFECT UPON THE PROBLEMS OF YOUTH. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE JUVENILE COURT SYSTEM ARE OUTLINED, AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE POLICE TO THIS PORTION OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS IS TRACED. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POLICE IN JUVENILE ENFORCEMENT ARE FULLY COVERED, WITH EMPHASIS UPON THE ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF A POLICE JUVENILE UNIT, SUPERVISOR'S ROLE, AND ROLE OF THE POLICE JUVENILE OFFICER. TECHNIQUES OF A PRACTICAL NATURE ARE PRESENTED TO ASSIST POLICE OFFICERS GENERALISTS OR SPECIALISTS - IN COPING WITH JUVENILE ENFORCEMENT PROBLEMS. QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO PREVENTION AND REHABILITATION ARE DISCUSSED AS WELL AS THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL FUNCTIONS OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICES.
