ANALYSIS OF EXPLANATORY PROBLEMS ORIGINALLY RAISED BY THE INVESTIGATIONS OF HENRY D MCKAY AND CLIFFORD R SHAW BUT MADE EQUIVOCAL BY RECENT INQUIRIES.
Abstract
DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEORETICAL, METHODOLOGICAL, AND EMPIRICAL CRITIQUES HAVE ILLUMINATED MANY OF THE QUESTIONS INVESTIGATED BY SHAW AND MCKAY, THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT THEY HAVE NOT SUBSTANTIALLY REFUTED THE BASIC CONCLUSIONS OF THAT WORK. THE DISCUSSION FOCUSES PRIMARILY ON TWO MAJOR CONCLUSIONS OF SHAW AND MCKAY THAT DELINQUENCY IS ENDEMIC IN CERTAIN NEIGHBORHOODS AND THAT THE PROBABILITY OF BECOMING DELINQUENT IS GREATER FOR PERSONS IN LOWER THAN IN HIGH INCOME STATUS GROUPS.
