Abstract
CONTRIBUTORS TO THE TEXT INCLUDE ACADEMICIANS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS FROM ALL AREAS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE. EACH ARTICLE PRESENTS A PARTICULAR POINT OF VIEW AND IS INTENDED TO STIMULATE REFLECTION AND DEBATE. THE FIRST SECTION OF THE TEXT TREATS GENERAL ISSUES SUCH AS JUDICIAL PROCESSES, RACISM, VICTIM COMPENSATION, WHITE-COLLAR CRIME, GUN CONTROL, AND ORGANIZED CRIME. LAW ENFORCEMENT PROBLEMS ARE EXAMINED IN ARTICLES CONCERNING POLICE ADMINISTRATION, POLICE DISCIPLINE, TRAINING, AND THE ROLE OF THE CITIZEN IN CRIME PREVENTION. LEGAL AND JUDICIAL ASPECTS OF THE SYSTEM ARE DISCUSSED. THEY INCLUDE THE EXCLUSIONARY RULE, SENTENCING, PLEA BARGAINING, RESTITUTION, NARCOTICS, AND PROSTITUTION. CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES IN CORRECTIONS ARE EXAMINED BY THE NEXT SET OF ARTICLE, INCLUDING PREDICTION OF DANGEROUSNESS IN INMATES, USE OF EX-OFFENDERS IN CORRECTIONS PROGRAMS, AND CONJUGAL VISITATION. TRENDS IN JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, THE FEMALE DELINQUENT, AND DIVERSION PROGRAMS ARE COVERED IN THE READINGS ON JUVENILE CRIME AND JUSTICE. THE CONCLUDING SECTION CONTAINS PRO AND CON VIEWS ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS AND FOOTNOTES FOLLOW EACH ARTICLE. BRIEF BIOGRAPHIES OF CONTRIBUTORS ARE PROVIDED. (MJM)
