Annotation: This report presents summary tables and commentary for published national government reports on corrections statistics for the period of U.S. history from 1850 (the year of the first national reports on the topic) to 1984.
Abstract: The introductory chapter discusses how corrections data were collected and reported by the Federal Government during various historical periods. The second chapter summarizes information on capital punishment, including data on illegal lynchings, which are necessary to understand any regional comparisons of the use of executions. Three chapters present statistics on State and Federal, jail, and juvenile facilities. A chapter presents information from Federal reports on Federal prisoners only, and another chapter presents limited information on probation and parole. One chapter combines information on Federal, State, jail, and juvenile facilities to provide an overall portrait of incarceration levels since 1850. One appendix summarizes census reports on the use of other forms of institutionalization since 1850, and a second appendix presents tallied data on capital punishment. Two other appendixes list major sources of corrections statistics and discuss some implications of the historical review for current statistical efforts.
