Annotation: Based on data collected through in-depth interviews with 13,986 State prison inmates, this report presents a detailed statistical profile of current inmates. The survey represents the largest database on prisoners in State institutions and offers a resource for evaluating the effectiveness of correctional policies.
Abstract: This is the fourth nationally representative survey of inmates; basic variables examined were sex, race, Hispanic origin, age, marital status, education, work before entering prison, income, and veteran status. The report describes the offenses for which inmates were convicted, sentences that inmates were serving and time they had already served, and data on alien inmates. Family background variables discussed here include parental drug or alcohol abuse, incarceration of family members, and physical or sexual abuse. Other topics covered in detail include inmates' criminal history, victim characteristics, and inmate weapon possession and use. The report also focuses on gang membership, drug abuse, HIV infection, drinking and participation in alcohol abuse programs, inmate participation in prison programs, and security level of inmate housing. 64 figures
