  Document URL: Text PDF
Corporate Author: Justice Research and Statistics Association
United States of America
Date Published: 1998
Page Count: 133
  Series: BJA Monographs
Annotation: This monograph reports the results of the Bureau of Justice Assistance State Evaluation Development Program working meeting, "Programs in Correctional Settings: Innovative State and Local Programs," held November 2-4, 1995, in Longmont, Col.
Abstract: The working meeting brought together more than 60 State planners and local practitioners, as well as researchers, analysts, and law enforcement officers who are involved in implementing or evaluating programs to improve the criminal justice system and their communities. This report describes workshop presentations of programs in correctional settings that focus on improving the criminal justice system at the State and local levels. The 21 programs described are funded under the Byrne Formula or Discretionary Grant programs and were nominated as effective programs. Several have been evaluated with the Bureau of Justice Assistance's evaluation criteria and guidance. The programs are based in 18 States. The programs described include the areas of sex offender treatment, jail and prison substance abuse treatment for both juveniles and adults, integrated programming for female offenders, a facility nursery program, residential treatment services, and a mentoring program. The format for program descriptions consists of a statement of the problem addressed, goals and objectives, program components, results and impact, and contact information. The programs hold promise for replication in other communities.
