Abstract: In fiscal year (FY) 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) continued their work through the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention sharing funding, supporting cross-agency efforts, and keeping prevention a high priority. OJJDP has developed many effective tools and strategies to address juvenile delinquency, from the Coordinating Council to the SMART geospatial mapping tool, a Web-accessible application for use by communities to obtain local resources in the prevention of crime and delinquency. OJJDP has created the Model Programs Guide, which provides effective strategies for addressing a range of juvenile justice issues. This report describes the important work of faith-based and small community organizations on everything from mentoring youth in detention to helping gang-involved youth. OJJDP continues to evaluate programs and initiatives. The report, divided into five chapters, highlights the major accomplishments of OJJDP for 2008 in serving children, families, and communities, in forming partnerships in the prevention and intervention in delinquency, in strengthening the juvenile justice system through the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act, in defending children against victimization, and in providing resources and information to those in the juvenile justice field.
