Abstract: Results of the testing indicate that all visible sectors were successfully overwritten in all test cases run against Darik’s Boot and Nuke (DBAN) Version 1.0.7. For the test cases that used drives containing an HPA or DCO, the tool behaved as designed by the vendor and did not overwrite hidden sectors. Darik’s Boot and Nuke (DBAN) Version 1.0.7 is a software media preparation tool used in computer forensic investigations. The Computer Forensics Tool Testing (CFTT), a joint project of the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST’s) Office of Law Enforcement Standards and Information Technology Laboratory, provides measurable assurance to practitioners, researchers, and others that the tools used in computer forensics investigations provide accurate results. This report presents the results from testing Darik’s Boot and Nuke 1.0.7 against the Forensic Media Preparation Tool Test Assertions and Test Plan Version 1.0. These results provide the information necessary for developers to improve tools, users to make informed choices, and the legal community and others to understand the tool’s capabilities.
