Abstract: The Conference for Children’s Justice and Safety: Unite, Build, Lead (October 12-14, 2011) drew 2,300 public officials, tribal representatives, juvenile justice practitioners, policymakers, law enforcement professionals, child advocates, educators, and researchers for the purpose of addressing key issues in the juvenile justice field. The conference featured special tracks on children’s exposure to violence, anti-gang strategies, child protection and advocacy, truancy and dropping out, at-risk delinquent girls, trends in tribal youth policy, evidence-based practices, and reforming the treatment of juvenile in custody. OJJDP’s new online Journal of Juvenile Justice is an accessible, practical tool for a diverse researcher and practitioner audience. This semi-annual, peer-reviewed journal will address a variety of issues in juvenile justice, ranging from delinquency prevention to evaluation of treatment approaches. In order to assist juvenile justice residential facilities in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies, Emergency Planning for Juvenile Justice Residential Facilities presents guidelines for comprehensive planning that address the needs of facility staff and children, youth, and families involved in the justice system during an emergency. The Hot Spots of Juvenile Crime: Findings From Seattle presents the first portrait of the distribution of officially recorded juvenile crime events in smaller geographical areas. The section on “Upcoming Events” briefly describes meetings, conferences, and training events related to juvenile justice from November 16, 2011, through June 12, 2012. “News in Brief” and “New Publications” are also addressed.
