  Annotation: This Bureau of Justice Statistics Bulletin presents data on State corrections expenditures for fiscal years 1982 – 2010.
  Abstract: Highlights from the report on State corrections expenditures for fiscal years 1982 through 2010 include the following: in 2010, State expenditures were $1.9 trillion while State spending on corrections was $48.5 billion; between 1982 and 2010, spending on corrections accounted for 1.9 to 3.3 percent of total expenditures for State governments; and between 1982 and 2010, spending for education varied between 29 percent and 33 percent of total State expenditures, while spending on public welfare varied between 22 percent and 25 percent, spending on highways varied between 5.7 percent and 8.6 percent, and spending on health care and hospitals varied between 6.2 percent and 7.5 percent. The data also indicate that between 1982 and 2010, State expenditures for air transportation, financial administration, police protection, and public safety varied between 29 percent and 32 percent. This bulletin from the Bureau of Justice Statistics presents data on State corrections expenditures for fiscal years 1982 through 2010. Data for the study were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau, Annual Survey of State Government Finances 1982-2010. Information presented in the bulletin is for fiscal years 1982–2010 and covers selected components of State expenditures, components of State corrections expenditures, institutional capital outlay expenditures and change in State prison populations, distribution of State spending on institutional capital outlay as a percent of total corrections spending, and per capita State corrections institution expenditures. Additional information is presented on trends in institutional operations expenditures, State prison medical expenditures, and changes in per capita institutional current operations expenditures.
