Article Discusses Teen Dating Violence

An article published on "The Atlantic" magazine's Web site on March 9, 2012, provides practical advice on how parents can address teen dating violence. Sherry Hamby of the University of New Hampshire based her article on findings from the National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence, research that OJJDP sponsored. (OJJDP)

 
BJA Launches Redesigned Web Site

BJA's Web site has a new look. The newly redesigned site allows users to create a "My BJA" account. It also includes a "Trending" link for popular content. Other tools provide customizable, self-service options to enhance visitors' experiences on the Web site. (BJA)

 
Enhancing Legal Assistance to Crime Victims

OVC is pleased to announce that it is accepting Statements of Interest from qualified nonprofit organizations and individual subject-matter experts that are interested in participating in a national initiative to enhance legal assistance to crime victims. (OVC)

 
Newspaper Op-Ed Addresses Children's Exposure to Violence

The "Miami Herald" recently published an op-ed under Joe Torre's signature that emphasizes the importance of preventing children's exposure to violence. Mr. Torre co-chairs the National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence; his Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation provides safe spaces for middle school students who face abusive home environments. Notice of Grants.gov Scheduled System Outage

Grants.gov will be undergoing scheduled system maintenance on April 28-29, 2012. No application submissions or activity will be able to take place during this maintenance period. The system will be back online Monday, April 30, 2012. (OJP)

 
Register for Crime Victims' Service Awards Ceremony

As a prelude to National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW), April 22-28, 2012, register to attend the National Crime Victims' Service Awards Ceremony on April 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. ET in Washington, DC. Applicants Sought for Tribal Youth Program Research

Application deadline: May 2, 2012
Applications are requested for Tribal Youth Field-Initiated Research and Evaluation Programs. This solicitation will fund rigorous research and evaluation initiatives that advance OJJDP's mission to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and victimization, with a focus on tribal youth, their families, and their communities. Apply for Financial Fraud and Abuse Fellowship

Application deadline: May 1, 2012
OVC's Victim Assistance Professional Development Fellowship Program is seeking applicants to undertake activities related to financial fraud and abuse, with a specific focus on elder financial exploitation and the relationship between financial abuse and other types of victimization. This competitive program will award up to $135,000. (OVC)

 
Apply for Violence Prevention Program Funding

Application deadline: May 1, 2012
OJJDP is accepting applications for the Community-Based Violence Prevention Demonstration Program. This program provides funding for localities to replicate proven multidisciplinary, community-based strategies to reduce violence. (OJJDP)

OJJDP invites applications for its Field-Initiated Research and Evaluation Program solicitation. OJJDP will fund rigorous research and evaluation initiatives focusing on school and education issues that relate to delinquency prevention and intervention and prevention of child victimization. NIJ is seeking applicants for the Research on the Link Between Victimization and Offending grant. This solicitation seeks proposals to conduct research that enhances knowledge of the relationship between victimization and offending, with an emphasis on criminal incidents or events. (NIJ)

 
Apply To Operate Offender Reentry Resource Center

Application deadline: April 19, 2012
BJA is seeking applications for funding to operate a National Adult and Juvenile Offender Reentry Resource Center under the Second Chance Act. The Second Chance Act is designed to help communities develop and implement strategies that address the challenges posed by offender reentry and recidivism reduction. (BJA)

Funding Available for National Telemedicine Center

Application deadline: May 8, 2012
Apply for the Sexual Assault Forensic Medical Examination Telemedicine Center: An Innovative Pilot Project to develop a national telemedicine center to administer sexual assault forensic medical exam services at four pilot sites. The sites will be selected through a separate solicitation issued by the recipient of this award in partnership with OVC. OVC will make one award of up to $3.5 million. (OVC)

 
Funding Available To Archive Juvenile Court Data

Application deadline: May 7, 2012
OJJDP is seeking applicants for its National Juvenile Court Data Archive solicitation. This program provides funding to an organization to collect and maintain the nation's primary source of detailed information on delinquency and status offense cases processed in juvenile courts. (OJJDP)

 
Funding Available To Examine Victimization Among Minorities

Application deadline: May 29, 2012
Applications are sought for the Violent Victimization Among Racial and Ethnic Minorities solicitation. This grant will fund research that will enhance the understanding of risk factors from the backgrounds of minority individuals that will explain their experiences of violent victimization, including individual, situational, family, school, peer, and community factors. Funding Supports Human Trafficking Victim Service Organizations

Application deadline: April 17, 2012
The Services for Victims of Human Trafficking solicitation provides funds to support comprehensive services for trafficking victims or specialized mental health or legal services, and to support efforts to increase community capacity to respond to victims. Multiple cooperative agreements of $200,000 to $400,000 will be awarded to victim service organizations to provide services to victims. (OVC)

 
Funds Available To Examine Culturally Responsive Strategies

Application deadline: May 8, 2012
Funding is available for the Identifying Culturally Responsive Victim-Centered Restorative Justice Strategies solicitation. OVC will award up to $250,000 to document the characteristics of existing programs, with an emphasis on practices implemented in tribal communities and urban inner-city communities and practices involving youth. Grant Funds Services to Adults/Children Experiencing Polyvictimization

Application deadline: May 15, 2012
OVC invites applications for the National Field-Generated Demonstration Projects solicitation to develop or enhance promising practices, models, and programs that build the capacity of the crime victims’ field to provide comprehensive services and support to both adult and child crime victims who experience polyvictimization. Two discretionary grants of up to $750,000 each will be awarded. (OVC)

 
Implementing Family-Based Substance Abuse Treatment Programs

Application deadline: April 24, 2012
Applications are sought for the Second Chance Act Family-Based Adult Offender Substance Abuse Treatment Program. The objective of this program is to provide comprehensive responses through planned, expanded, or implemented family-based substance abuse treatment programs. (BJA)

 
Jurisdictions Sought To Target Behavioral Health Needs

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation will support the participation of eight states in a $1 million project that will divert youth with behavioral health conditions from the juvenile justice system to community-based programs and services. Proposals Sought for Trafficking in Persons Grant

Application deadline: May 29, 2012
NIJ is seeking proposals for the Research and Evaluation on Trafficking in Persons grant. Applications are sought for research and evaluation studies to meet the criminal justice and public safety challenges from trafficking in persons at the federal, state, local, and tribal levels. (NIJ)

 
Solicitation Available for Victim Legal Assistance Networks

Application deadline: April 19, 2012
OVC invites applications for the Wraparound Victim Legal Assistance Network Demonstration Project to develop collaborative models for comprehensive, wraparound, pro bono, legal assistance networks to meet a wide range of crime victim legal needs that can be replicated in other jurisdictions. This is a 4-year project, with up to $400,000 available for the first 15-month phase. (OVC)

 
Solicitation Examines Children Exposed to Violence

Application deadline: May 22, 2012
Funding is available for the Research and Evaluation on Children Exposed to Violence solicitation. NIJ is seeking proposals that address resilience, polyvictimization, electronic aggression, or justice system responses to children identified as being exposed to violence. (NIJ)

 
Victim Services Research and Evaluation Grant Announced

Application deadline: April 25, 2012
Funding is available for Training and Technical Assistance To Improve Understanding and Application of Research and Evaluation in Victim Services. OVC will award one cooperative agreement of up to $250,000 for the first 12-month project period to develop and implement national-scope training and technical assistance that can be delivered through interactive online access. BJS Releases Justice Assistance Grant Program 2011

"Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program 2011" (NCJ 237732, 8 pp.) describes the steps used in the formula calculation process and presents the summary results. Funds are distributed based on resident population and violent crime data reported to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program. In total, approximately $368.3 million was allocated for the FY 2011 JAG awards. (BJS)

 
Keep Informed About New BJA Resources

The March issue of "Justice Today" features an article that discusses BJA's redesigned Web site. This issue also includes articles about SOARING2, an e-learning system that assists in effective offender management, and BJA's Center for Program Evaluation and Performance Management. OVC Releases Report to the Nation

OVC has released its 2011 Report to the Nation, "Rising to the Challenge: A New Era in Victim Services." The report summarizes OVC's programs and services in fiscal years 2009 and 2010 and describes the effect of these programs and services on victims, survivors, and communities. This report highlights the history of the Crime Victims Fund and more. (OVC)

"Environmental Scan 2011" (ACCN 025630) presents information and resources relevant to the corrections field. This report discusses demographic and social trends, criminal justice trends, corrections populations and trends, international developments, and more. (NIC)

 
Publications Address Bomb Suit Standard/Certification Requirements

NIJ has released two new publications related to bomb suits. "Public Safety Bomb Suit Standard, NIJ Standard-0117.00" (NCJ 227357, 87 pp.) defines the requirements and the methods used to test performance for public safety. "Public Safety Bomb Suit Certification Program Requirements, NIJ CR-0117.00" (NCJ 237910, 23 pp.) specifies the requirements that a certification body must satisfy to comply with the standard. Seminar Discusses Strategies for Addressing Repeat Victimization

On April 12, 2012, NIJ will host "Violent Repeat Victimization: Prospects and Challenges for Research and Practice." In this free presentation, Janet L. Lauritsen, Ph.D., will summarize research on repeat violent victimization. She will also discuss possible factors that can be used to predict whether victimization is likely to be repeated and suggest how such information can inform policy and practice. (NIJ)

 
Serving Sexual Assault Victims in Rural Communities

On April 4, 2012, at 2 p.m. ET, OVC will conduct a Web Forum Guest Host Session on serving sexual assault victims in rural communities. Robin Clover, from the Sublette County Sexual Assault and Family Violence Task Force, and Tiffany Eskelson-Maestas, from the Wyoming Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, will lead the discussion. Web Forum Discusses Sexual Assault Protection Orders

On April 11, 2012, at 2 p.m. ET, OVC will conduct a Web Forum Guest Host Session on Analyzing the Impact of Sexual Assault Protection Orders. Laura Jones, CourtWatch Manager of King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KCSARC), and DeAnn Yamamoto, Deputy Executive Director of KCSARC, will lead the discussion. Apply for 2012 NVAA

Apply now for the National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA), to be held August 6-10, 2012, in Jacksonville, Florida. Continuing Education Units will be awarded to participants who complete all of the requirements of the Foundation-Level Training, Professional Skill-Building Institute, or Leadership Institute. The application deadline is July 27, 2012. (OVC)

 
Registration Open for NIJ Conference

The NIJ Conference 2012 will be held June 18-20, 2012, in Arlington, Virginia. For more than a decade, NIJ's annual conference has brought together criminal justice scholars, policymakers, and practitioners at the local, state, and federal levels to share the most recent findings from research and technology. Training Available for Rural Law Enforcement Officers

The Rural Law Enforcement Technology Institute will be held May 6-11, 2012, in Annapolis, Maryland. The institute provides an opportunity for rural law enforcement officers to learn about and discuss technology initiatives and issues affecting the rural law enforcement community.
