2013 NCVRW Theme DVD Now Available

The 2013 National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) Theme DVD is now available to view online. This 6-minute video, part of the 2013 NCVRW Resource Guide, highlights both new challenges faced by victims and by those who serve victims, as well as new solutions and opportunities for response. NCVRW will be observed April 21-27, 2013. (OVC)

 
OVC TTAC Spotlights Consultant Lyndel Williams

Lyndel Williams is Training Director of the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, where he has provided training on sexual harassment, rape risk reduction, sexual predators, stalking/cyberstalking, and interviewing victims with communicative or cognitive disabilities. He has 16 years of experience working with the criminal justice systems of Texas and Louisiana. (OVC)

 
Youth Violence Prevention Summit Held in January

On January 22, 2013, the House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force convened the Youth Violence Prevention Summit in Washington, DC. Panelists discussed ways to identify threats of violence in schools and communities, strategies to reduce violence, and legislative initiatives to empower communities. View the panelists' presentations. Applications Sought To Evaluate Firearms and Violence

Application deadline: May 2, 2013
The Research on Firearms and Violence solicitation seeks applications for research on firearms and violence that includes, but is not limited to, the effects of criminal justice interventions on reducing gun violence, improving data systems for studying gun violence, illicit gun markets, and the effects of firearm policies and legislation on public safety. Apply for 2014 NCVRW Resource Guide Production

Application deadline: March 13, 2013
One cooperative agreement of $350,000 will be awarded to produce the 2014 National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) Resource Guide. The guide will serve as a resource for the victims field to support efforts to heighten the public's awareness of crime victim issues nationwide during NCVRW in April 2014 and throughout the year. Apply To Become a Visiting Fellow

Application deadline: March 28, 2013
Through the BJA Visiting Fellows Program solicitation, BJA is recruiting Fellows who have significant work and academic experience in a criminal justice policy, practice, or research setting who can make significant contributions, through BJA, to enhancing practice and innovation in the field. Funding Addresses Comprehensive Approaches To Combat Trafficking

Application deadline: March 14, 2013
Through the Enhanced Collaborative Model to Combat Human Trafficking solicitation, BJA and OVC will award cooperative agreements of up to $500,000 for combating sex trafficking and labor trafficking of foreign nationals and U.S. citizens. Selected sites will receive a BJA award to support a law enforcement agency and an OVC award to support a victim service organization. (OVC)

 
Funding Available To Implement SORNA Programs

Application deadline: March 26, 2013
The Support for Adam Walsh Act Implementation Grant Program solicitation will support jurisdictions that are developing and/or enhancing programs designed to implement the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) of the Adam Walsh Act. SORNA protects children and adults from sexual exploitation and violent crime, prevents child abuse and child pornography, and promotes Internet safety. (SMART)

 
Funding Available To Organize VOCA Administrator Conference

Application deadline: March 18, 2013
OVC is seeking applicants to plan and implement the National Joint Training Conference for VOCA Victim Assistance and Victim Compensation Administrators, to be held in 2014. One discretionary grant of $150,000 will be awarded and, depending on grantee performance and funding availability, additional funding may be provided to plan and execute the 2015 conference. Grants Enhance Tribal Justice Systems

Application deadline: April 4, 2013
BJA is seeking applicants for its Tribal Civil and Criminal Legal Assistance Grants, Training, and Technical Assistance program, which provides grants for direct legal services for indigent defendants and respondents in tribal justice systems. This solicitation also seeks applications to provide advocacy training and technical assistance for the development, enrichment, and enhancement of judicial system personnel within tribal justice systems. Solicitation Seeks To Build Community-Police Partnerships

Application deadline: March 17, 2013
The MetLife Foundation Community-Police Partnership Awards solicitation seeks to enhance neighborhood safety and revitalization through partnerships between law enforcement and community groups. Awards are available in two categories: neighborhood revitalization and special strategy. Eligible applicants must be member organizations of partnerships that include, but are not limited to, community organizations and police. (BJA)

January Issue of NJJEC Bulletin Available

The National Juvenile Justice Evaluation Center (NJJEC), funded by OJJDP, has released the January 2013 issue of its newsletter, "NJJEC Bulletin." This issue includes articles about understanding control variables; the MacArthur Foundation's Models for Change Knowledge Brief Series; the Rapid Referral program in Chittenden County, Vermont; and upcoming events. Latest Issue of Research Report Digest Released

NIJ has released the ninth issue of its "Research Report Digest." This is an online publication that provides brief descriptions of studies in various criminal justice disciplines (such as crime, violence, forensic sciences, and law enforcement) along with evaluations of technologies that are used in the law enforcement and corrections fields. Publication Discusses Save Our Streets Project

This BJA-sponsored report, "Testing a Public Health Approach to Gun Violence" (NCJ 241019, 49 pp.), evaluates the Save Our Streets (SOS) project, which was conducted from January 2010 through May 2012. The SOS community-based project was established to address the problem of gun violence in Crown Heights, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. (BJA)

 
Report Details Firearm Background Checks

BJS has released "Background Checks for Firearm Transfers, 2010 - Statistical Tables" (NCJ 238226, 17 pp.). These statistical tables provide the estimated number of firearm applications and denials since the inception of the Brady Act in 1994 through 2010. The study finds an estimated 10.4 million applications for firearm transfers or permits were received for background checks in 2010; 1.5 percent were denied. (BJS)

 
Strategic Planning Assessment Released

With BJA support, the National Criminal Justice Association has released "SAA Strategic Planning: Stakeholder Engagement Strategies" (NCJ 241276, 12 pp.). This document describes how state criminal justice administering agencies engage in strategic planning and examines stakeholder identification, outreach, and the most commonly used engagement strategies. Enhanced Editions of PREA Toolkits Available

NIC has released enhanced versions of "Implementing the Prison Rape Elimination Act: Toolkit for Jails" (ACCN 026880) and "Implementing the Prison Rape Elimination Act: Toolkit for Juvenile Agencies and Facilities" (ACCN 026881). These resources contain self-evaluation checklists and action plan worksheets, which are valuable planning and implementation tools for project management and provide documentation of efforts to comply with PREA standards. Forum Discusses Young Men Exposed to Violence

On February 28, 2013, at 2 p.m. ET, in commemoration of National Black History Month, OVC will conduct a Web Forum Guest Host Session on reaching young men of color who are exposed to violence. Recorded Webinar Discusses Learning and Performance

On January 16-17, 2013, NIC held a satellite/Internet broadcast titled "From Research to Application: The Case for Learning and Performance" (ACCN 026893). During the discussion, participants explored promising practices, resources, and examples to assist with the transformation of a training department into a center of learning and performance that can directly impact employee on-the-job performance. Statistical Briefing Book Updated

OJJDP has updated the Statistical Briefing Book's frequently asked questions (FAQs) section. These FAQs provide answers to the most commonly asked questions about juvenile offending, victimization of juveniles, and involvement of youth in the juvenile justice system. (OJJDP)

 
Webinar Discusses Cyber Security/Identity Theft

On February 19, 2013, at 2 p.m. ET, the National Identity Theft Victims Assistance Network (NITVAN) will host an OVC-funded Webinar on cyber security and identity theft victimization. Webinar Discusses Justice and Mental Health Grant

On February 19, 2013, at 2 p.m. ET, the Council of State Governments Justice Center will host a Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP) Applicant Webinar. This Webinar will assist grant applicants with the application process for BJA's Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program. BJA staff will provide an overview of this year's JMHCP grants and will discuss eligibility and application materials. (BJA)

 
Webinar To Discuss Women's Health in Corrections

On February 20, 2013, NIC will host "Health, Justice, Women: Behavioral Health and OB/GYN." This live 3-hour broadcast, the second in a series, will take a closer look at areas introduced in the first broadcast. It will focus on the complexities of behavioral, obstetrical, and gynecological issues that impact all women in the justice systems. (NIC)

ATF To Host Toolmark Identification Training Session

On September 23-27, 2013, at the National Laboratory Center in Ammendale, Maryland, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), together with NIJ, will host "Toolmark Identification and Comparison Training." This class supports the identification and comparison of toolmarks commonly encountered in criminal investigations. (NIJ)

 
Attend Serial Number Restoration Training

The National Firearms Examiner Academy, with support from NIJ, is offering "Serial Number Restoration Training." This class supports the identification and tracing of firearms recovered in criminal investigations. Three training sessions will be held: February 26-28, 2013, in Scottsdale, Arizona; March 12-14, 2013, in Chicago, Illinois; and July 16-18, 2013, in Ammendale, Maryland. (NIJ)

 
Forensic Science Training Available for Legal Professionals

West Virginia University, with support from NIJ, is offering "Essentials of Forensic Science for Legal Professionals Program." This program will take place March 19-20, 2013, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It will provide the basic precepts of forensic science training and supply the tools to effectively apply this information for trial. (NIJ)

 
Institute Provides Training for Law Enforcement Officers

NIJ's Technology Institute: Law Enforcement will be held June 2-6, 2013, in Annapolis, Maryland. The Institute provides an opportunity for law enforcement officers to learn about and discuss technology initiatives and issues affecting the law enforcement community. Applications must be received by March 29, 2013. (NIJ)

 
Join NIJ at AAFS Annual Meeting

Join NIJ at the 2013 American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS) annual meeting for the all-day event "The Research After Eureka! How NIJ Funded Research Supports the Science of Forensics!" At this event, NIJ grantees will present their forensic research and development projects. It will take place on February 19, 2013, in Washington, DC. (NIJ)

 
OJJDP Offers Grant Management Training to Grantees

OJJDP's National Training and Technical Assistance Center is offering a new online training for OJJDP grant recipients. "Managing Your Grant Award" teaches grantees how to manage projects efficiently, meet progress and financial reporting requirements, and avoid common reporting and budgeting errors. (OJJDP)

 
Registration Open for National Crime Symposium

The National Crime Symposium, hosted by the Institute for Social Justice, will take place February 25 to March 1, 2013, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The symposium will focus on building trust between members of the justice system and the communities they serve. OJJDP Acting Administrator Melodee Hanes will deliver a keynote address on February 28. (OJJDP)

 
Summit Discusses Innovations in Criminal Justice

On February 19-21, 2013, in Miami, Florida, the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, in partnership with BJA and the Center for Court Innovation, will host the Innovations in Criminal Justice Summit II. The summit will highlight 10 innovative criminal justice practices. (BJA)

 
Training Class Addresses Corrections' Role in Reentry

The National Correctional Industries Association, with support from NIC, is offering "Enhancing Correctional Industries Role in Reentry." This regional training class will focus on assessments, employment readiness, career resource centers, and retention. Three training sessions will be held: February 26-28, 2013, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; May 21-23, 2013, in Folsom, California; and September 10-12, 2013, in Raleigh, North Carolina. (NIC)

 
Training Courses Available for Forensic Toxicologists

RTI International, with funding from NIJ, is offering previously recorded courses for forensic toxicologists. The courses are free and provide continuing education credits. (NIJ)

 
Violence Interdiction Training Available

The Virginia Center for Policing Innovation, with support from BJA, is offering "Violence Interdiction: A Proactive Approach to Mitigating Conflict." Training sessions will be held March 13-14, 2013, at the Lafayette Police Training Center in Lafayette, Indiana, and April 23-24, 2013, at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center in Greenville, Texas.
