August 2012 NVAA Rescheduled to 2013

Due to mandatory Department of Justice conference guidelines and policies, the August 2012 National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA) has been rescheduled to 2013. MOV Nomination Period Now Open

The nomination period for the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor (MOV) is open. Nominations will be accepted from May 31 to July 31, 2012. The medal is awarded annually by the President to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life. (BJA)

 
OVC TTAC Spotlights Consultant Scott M. Fearing

Scott M. Fearing is Program Director for the Gay Alliance. He addresses diversity topics such as sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Mr. Fearing meets with schools, law enforcement, hospitals, and political leaders as a representative of the communities he serves. Read the full biography. (OVC)

 
Submit Nominations for Crime Victims' Service Awards

Nominations are being accepted for the 2013 National Crime Victims' Service Awards. Help ensure that outstanding service providers and programs are given the recognition they deserve by submitting your nomination now. Updated award categories are: Volunteer for Victims Award and Federal Service Award. The deadline to submit nominations is Wednesday, September 5, 2012. (OVC)

2013 NCVRW Community Awareness Project Funding Available

Application deadline: July 18, 2012
The National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators, through a grant from OVC, is seeking proposals for projects to raise public awareness of victims' rights and services in communities during National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW), April 21-27, 2013. Applications Sought for Bulletproof Vest Partnership

Application deadline: June 27, 2012
The Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) is a unique Department of Justice initiative that provides funds to support the purchase of NIJ-approved vests. Applications are being accepted through the electronic BVP system. (BJA)

 
Apply Now for SCAAP Grant Funds

Application deadline: July 6, 2012
Applicants are sought for the FY 2012 State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP). SCAAP provides federal payments to states and localities that incurred correctional officer salary costs for incarcerating undocumented criminal aliens with at least one felony or two misdemeanor convictions for violations of state or local law, and who were incarcerated for at least 4 consecutive days. Apply To Be a BJA Visiting Fellow

Application deadline: June 28, 2012
The BJA Visiting Fellows Program seeks to leverage state, local, or tribal subject-matter expertise to assess areas of need and to develop strategies, tools, and policies in collaboration with BJA staff for the benefit of the criminal justice field. BJA will host up to five fellows; fellowships will last 12 to 18 months. (BJA)

 
Cooperative Agreement Seeks Resource Development

Application deadline: June 29, 2012
NIC seeks proposals for Resources for NIC's Website on Data Collection and Analysis in Corrections. Resource materials will include, but are not limited to, documents or other information sources that provide examples of policy and procedure governing information management, information on effective practices in developing or acquiring automated information management systems, and an overview of current information technology in corrections. Education Department Seeks Information on Disconnected Youth

Application deadline: July 5, 2012
The U.S. Department of Education has released a request for information (RFI) on Strategies for Improving Outcomes for Disconnected Youth. The RFI invites organizations to recommend effective approaches to increase the rate at which at-risk young people meet educational, employment, and other key development goals. (OJJDP)

 
Funding Opportunity for Violence Prevention Research Available

Application deadline: June 28, 2012
OJJDP is seeking applications for the Community-Based Violence Prevention Field-Initiated Research and Evaluation Program. This project will support new and ongoing rigorous, scientific research and evaluation that has practical applications for communities seeking to prevent and reduce youth violence. (OJJDP)

"APEX Resources Directory Vol. 2: Communications, Focus Groups, and Development" (ACCN 025303) provides supportive information to correctional agencies that are implementing the APEX (Achieving Performance Excellence) model. This book introduces the National Institute of Corrections Information Center and provides critical additional resources on communications plans, focus groups, and team development. (NIC)

 
Annotated Bibliography Available for Corrections Leadership

"Leadership: Selected Resources for Criminal Justice Professionals - Annotated Bibliography" (ACCN 025971) includes resources in the following categories: authentic leadership development, emotional intelligence, positive psychology, and more. Guidelines for Victim and Witness Assistance Revised

Effective May 2012, the Attorney General approved a revision to the "Attorney General Guidelines for Victim and Witness Assistance," addressing the mandatory federal child abuse reporting requirement. The amended guidelines removed the requirement that children receive care or reside in a federal facility at which the covered employee works, thus ensuring compliance with the federal child abuse reporting law (42 U.S.C. §13031). Latest TECHBeat Now Available

NLECTC has released "TECHBeat Spring 2012" (NCJ 238694, 16 pp.). This issue features an article about the use of gyroplanes to provide police support. Other articles discuss cold case investigative practices and outcomes, NIJ's body armor followup inspection and testing program, and how an NIJ interactive training tool helps Chicago officers learn Spanish. New Issue of Research Report Digest Released

NIJ has released the fifth issue of its "Research Report Digest," an online publication that provides brief descriptions of studies in various criminal justice disciplines, such as crime, violence, and forensic sciences, along with evaluations of technologies in the law enforcement and corrections fields. OJP Releases Fact Sheet on Drug Courts

OJP (in collaboration with OJJDP, NIJ, and BJA) has released "Drug Courts" (NCJ 238527, 2 pp.) This fact sheet examines adult and juvenile drug court program models and OJP's support of adult and juvenile drug courts. It also provides facts, research findings, and additional resources regarding drug courts. (OJJDP)

 
Proceedings of Large Jail Network Meeting Available

Publication Discusses Sexual Violence Research Roundtable

"Fifty State Survey of Juvenile Sex Offender Registration Requirements" provides (by state) the necessary requirements for the registration of juvenile sex offenders. The What Works in Reentry Clearinghouse offers easy access to research on the effectiveness of a variety of reentry programs and practices. It provides a user-friendly, one-stop shop for practitioners and service providers who are seeking guidance on evidence-based reentry interventions, as well as a useful resource for researchers and others interested in reentry. Information Sharing Certificate Program Announced

On October 1-4, 2012, in Washington, DC, the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute will hold its Information Sharing Certificate Program. This 3-day program will teach leaders in the juvenile justice, child welfare, education, behavioral health, and other child-serving fields how to overcome information sharing challenges. (OJJDP)

 
National Behavioral Health Conference Registration Open

On June 25-28, 2012, the Indian Health Service will host its 2012 National Behavioral Health Conference in Bloomington, Minnesota. This year's theme - mobilizing partnerships to promote wellness - emphasizes the importance of collaboration to improve the behavioral health of American Indian and Alaska Native people. (OJJDP)

 
Register for Coalition for Juvenile Justice Conference

OJJDP Acting Administrator Melodee Hanes will deliver a keynote address at the Coalition for Juvenile Justice’s annual conference, "Improving Justice Outcomes for Youth and Families: Uniting Science, Policy and Practice." The conference will take place June 21-24, 2012, in Bethesda, Maryland, and will promote juvenile justice and delinquency prevention system innovations that reduce court contact and improve outcomes for youth and families.
