OVC Spotlights Consultant Rebecca Dreke

Rebecca Dreke, Senior Program Associate with the Stalking Resource Center at the National Center for Victims of Crime, provides training on all aspects of stalking, including the use of technology to stalk. She has trained thousands of multidisciplinary practitioners nationally on stalking, sexual assault, domestic violence, LGBTQ issues, and bias-motivated violence.(OVC)

 
Promote Your Event on the NCJRS Calendar

If your organization or agency sponsors conferences, workshops, or other training events that focus on juvenile or criminal justice, victim assistance, or drug abuse, you can promote the events on the NCJRS Justice Events Calendar. The calendar is accessed by researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and others who may be interested in attending or exhibiting at your event. (NCJRS)

 
Proposals Sought To Prevent High-Risk College Drinking

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has announced a challenge that seeks proposals for technology-based products to decrease the acceptability of and engagement in high-risk drinking among college students. Product designs may include Web applications, mobile apps, short message services, and podcasts. Submissions must be received by July 8, 2013. (OJJDP)

The PREA Program: Demonstration Projects to Establish "Zero Tolerance" Cultures for Sexual Assault in Correctional Facilities solicitation seeks applicants to assist facilities in implementing prevention, identification, and response mechanisms that will reduce the incidence of sexual abuse in confinement facilities. Assessing the Oil Industry’s Impact on Violence

Application deadline: August 5, 2013
The Exploratory Research on the Impact of the Growing Oil Industry in the Dakotas and Montana on Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking solicitation seeks proposals to conduct exploratory, mixed-methods research related to the impact (if any) of the oil industry on domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking in the Dakotas and Montana. Assessing Youth With Sexual Offending Behavior

Application deadline: June 24, 2013
The Basic Scientific Research to Assess Youth With Sexual Offending Behavior solicitation seeks applications for basic scientific research in the development and validation of a risk assessment tool designed for use in criminal and juvenile justice systems to estimate the short-term risk that juveniles with a history of sex offenses may recommit such offenses. Campus Safety Center Solicitation Released

Application deadline: June 27, 2013
BJA is seeking the creation and management of a National Center for Campus Public Safety. The center will identify and examine emerging risks to campus safety and security and develop resources to combat those risks and facilitate the transfer of research to practice. (BJA)

 
Enhancing Fusion Centers’ Capabilities

Application deadline: July 1, 2013
The National Network of Fusion Centers Capability and Capacity Enhancement solicitation will enhance the capability and capacity of fusion centers, which serve as focal points within the state and local environment for the receipt, analysis, gathering, and sharing of threat-related information between the federal government and state, local, tribal, territorial, and private-sector partners. Justice Reinvestment Solicitation Available

Application deadline: June 27, 2013
The Criminal Justice Improvement and Recidivism Reduction through the State-Level Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI) solicitation will have two phases. Phase I activities will involve data analysis and policy development. Phase II activities will involve policy/program implementation and assessment of data-driven results. (BJA)

 
Juvenile Justice Information Sharing Solicitation Available

Application deadline: July 9, 2013
OJJDP is seeking applications for its National Juvenile Justice Information Sharing Training and Technical Assistance Program. Through this program, OJJDP will build the capacity of juvenile justice, child welfare, mental health, and education systems and use existing information-sharing standards, procedures, tools, and practices across agencies to improve services and outcomes for youth, families, and communities. OJJDP Seeks Juvenile Justice Data Fellow

Application deadline: July 15, 2013
OJJDP is seeking applications for its Division of Innovation and Research Fellowship Program on Juvenile Justice Data. The fellowship will provide an opportunity for researchers with experience and expertise in juvenile justice, survey methodology, and statistics to help implement collaborative cross-agency strategies, policies, and programs to enhance and improve data for use by policymakers and practitioners nationwide. Program Supports Youth With Sexual Behavior Problems

Application deadline: July 25, 2013
OJJDP is seeking applications for funding under the Youth with Sexual Behavior Problems Program. This program will fund agencies that use a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to providing intervention and supervision services for youth with sexual behavior problems and treatment services for their child victims and families. Solicitation Available To Develop Mentoring Resource Center

Application deadline: July 23, 2013
OJJDP seeks applicants to develop the National Mentoring Resource Center, which will provide comprehensive resources, references, and training materials to enhance the capacity of mentoring organizations to develop, implement, and expand evidence- and research-based mentoring practices. (OJJDP)

 
Terrorism Prevention TTA Grant Announced

Application deadline: July 15, 2013
BJA is seeking applicants for the State, Local, and Tribal Terrorism Prevention Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) Program. The selected applicant will develop curricula; manage program advancement and outreach; develop, publish, and disseminate materials and maintain an online presence; and develop and maintain technical assistance and analytic capabilities to detect, investigate, and interdict violent extremist/terrorist acts. Addressing the State of Elder Abuse Research

"Understanding Elder Abuse: New Directions for Developing Theories of Elder Abuse Occurring in Domestic Settings" (NCJ 241731, 40 pp.) discusses findings from two NIJ studies of elder abuse in domestic settings. In this publication, the authors emphasize the importance of developing new theories of elder abuse and of looking at current theories to increase understanding and guide future research. (NIJ)

 
Article Details Child Victimization Training in Kosovo

In August 2012, visiting fellows from OVC and OJJDP provided training on child victimization to nearly 40 Kosovar professionals. Read “OVC Builds on International Relationship with Kosovo Through Child Victimization Training in Kosovo” to learn about OVC’s relationship with Kosovo, Kosovo’s current response to child victims, commonalities between the United States and Kosovo in responding to child abuse, and the training event in Pristina. Bulletin Details Juveniles in Residential Placement

Juveniles in Residential Placement, 2010“ (NCJ 241060, 16 pp.) presents findings from the biennial census of public and private juvenile residential facilities that the U.S. Census Bureau conducted and OJJDP sponsored. The bulletin compares information for detained versus committed offenders and youth in public versus private residential facilities and makes state-level comparisons. (OJJDP)

 
Current Issue of BJA Newsletter Released

The June issue of “Justice Today” features an article about the swearing in of OJP’s new Assistant Attorney General, Karol V. Mason. Other articles discuss the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program, the JAG Showcase, BJA’s new State and Territory fact sheets, and upcoming training opportunities. (BJA)

 
Documents Address Planning of Large-Scale Events

BJA and OJP have released Law Enforcement Planning for Major Events, a Web page that includes three documents that discuss best practices related to security planning. Two of the documents analyze operations of the Tampa, Florida, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina, police departments for the 2012 Presidential Nominating Conventions. (BJA and OJP)

Latest Journal of Juvenile Justice Released

OJJDP has released the spring issue of the online “Journal of Juvenile Justice.” This issue highlights family-focused juvenile probation services to reduce recidivism; the strains of incarceration on juvenile offenders; the one family, one judge model of decisionmaking in juvenile dependency and delinquency cases; and more. OVC Releases Vision 21 Final Report

Vision 21: Transforming Victim Services Final Report” is the first comprehensive assessment of the crime victim assistance field in nearly 15 years. This report seeks to permanently transform the way crime victims are treated in the United States. Read the report to see the findings, recommendations, and strategies revealed through the Vision 21 initiative. (OVC)

Report Summarizes BJS PREA Data Collection Activities

BJS has released PREA Data Collection Activities, 2013 (NCJ 242114, 5 pp.). The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA; P.L. 108-79) requires the Attorney General to submit to Congress, not later than June 30 of each year, a report on BJS activities for the preceding calendar year. This document fulfills this requirement. (BJS)

 
Sexual Victimization in Juvenile Facilities Detailed

BJS has released “Sexual Victimization in Juvenile Facilities Reported by Youth, 2012” (NCJ 241708, 65 pp.). This report presents data from the 2012 National Survey of Youth in Custody, conducted in 326 juvenile confinement facilities between February and September 2012 with a sample of 8,707 adjudicated youth. Study Examines Childhood Bullying

A recent blog post for stopbullying.gov reports on recently published research showing that victims of childhood bullying have a greater risk of developing mental health problems later in life. (OJJDP)

Arrest Data Analysis Tool Updated

The dynamic Arrest Data Analysis Tool has been updated to include 2011 data, the latest year available. This also updates an incorrect version of the 2011 data that were available in the tool from May 31 through June 6. The tool allows you to generate graphs and tables of arrests from 1980 through the latest year. (BJS)

 
Participate in Webinar on Mortgage Fraud Victimization

On June 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. ET, the National Crime Prevention Council, with funding from OVC, will conduct a Webinar for victims of mortgage fraud. The Webinar will explore the prosecutor's role in responding to the mortgage fraud crisis, including national trends and factors that prosecutors consider. Registration is required. (OVC)

 
Register for Child Protective Services Webinar Series

On June 18, July 16, and August 20, 2013, the National Resource Center for Child Protective Services will host the Webinar series “Safety Organized, Trauma-informed, Solution-focused Approaches to Domestic Violence in Child Protection.” Presenters will share current knowledge for child protection professionals, including strategies for family engagement and family-centered safety and case planning. Webinar To Explore Trauma-Informed Approaches for Girls

On June 26, 2013, at 2 p.m. ET, OJJDP’s National Girls Institute will host the Webinar “Girls at Risk: A Trauma-Informed Approach.” Panelists will discuss trauma and the impact of triggers, the specifics of a trauma-informed approach, the guiding principles of gender-responsive services, and examples of effective intervention exercises to use with girls. Apply for Multi-System Integration Certificate Program

The Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute is accepting applications for its Multi-System Integration Certificate Program to be held October 23-30, 2013, in Washington, DC. The program will highlight multi-system reform efforts related to at-risk or system-involved youth, with a focus on crossover youth. Applications are due by June 20, 2013. (OJJDP)

 
NCJFCJ Accepting Conference Registrations

On July 14-17, 2013, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) will hold its 76th Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington. This conference will provide juvenile and family court officials with information and tools to improve case processing and outcomes for children, youth, families, victims, and their communities. Register for Juvenile Justice Youth Summit

The Coalition for Juvenile Justice will host its 2013 Youth Summit on August 2-3, 2013, in Washington, DC. In accordance with the summit theme, “Empowering Young Leaders for Juvenile Justice Reform,” sessions will provide youth leaders with information on juvenile justice basics, disproportionate minority contact, the school-to-prison pipeline, and leadership development. Registration Open for Crimes Against Children Conference

On August 12-15, 2013, the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center and the Dallas Police Department will host their annual Crimes Against Children Conference in Dallas, Texas. Training workshops will be offered for professionals who combat crimes against children. (OJJDP)
